Hi. I’m looking at buying a refurbished 2009 20” iMac as my sons Christmas present, as he wants to use GarageBand to make music (Dubstep). Will a Mac this old have a version of GarageBand on it? If not, will a version from the store be compatible? Will we have any issues with the version of iOS on it?

And if he buys a deck (with scratch pads, like this), will he have any issues using this with a Mac/GarageBand?

He’s 10, and therefore is unsure himself about what he needs, but he’s put together some decent tunes on his mothers iPad, so I’m pretty sure this is the best route to go.

Thanks, all help appreciated.

A mid 2009 20" iMac can even run the newest iteration of macOS, High Sierra. You can just download Garageband from the App Store. Connecting the DJ controller to the Mac shouldn't be an issue either.

If your son wants to mix/beat sync music, put effects on it etc. I'd recommend the DJ software Traktor though which is really THE thing.

However, the Hercules controller seems to come together with a mixing software called DJUCED.

Depending on which ipad he has use of it may be more powerful than that old imac, you may be better off getting him a slightly newer MacBook air or ipad for himself.
