Hey guys,

Sorry to be creating a thread about this, but I did some searching and I couldn't find anyone in my situation.

I want to buy the new iPad 8th generation with 128GB here: https://www.apple.com/au/ipad-10.2/

I currently have an iPad Mini 3 with 64GB.

My plan is to move all of my data on my iPad Mini 3 over to the new iPad 8th generation, but I don't know how to do this?

My PC is running Windows 10 Pro.

Thank you for any advice!

Will you still have your Mini when your new iPad arrives? If so, it will prompt you to hold your iPad camera over the new iPad and it will transfer everything to the new one. That’s what I did and it transferred everything over just as it was on the old one. It was very simple. It will guide you through the entire process. Great feature.
EDIT: All my data, contacts, etc. transferred to the new iPad.

Get iTunes from the Microsoft Store. You'll have the ability to backup a majority of your data.

This sounds nice, but I've never heard of this before?
Install iTunes and do an encrypted backup and restore. In my experience, iTunes restores more things (and more quickly) than iCloud does.

Alas, apps will need to redownload from the App Store now.

Rui No Onna, AutomaticApple, I've already got iTunes installed on my Windows 10 PC.

So I'll need to re-download all my Apps from scratch???

What about the data that's contained within the Apps that are stored on the iPad Mini's local 64GB drive?

why not get the mini 5 the mini 3 is way too old plus its no longer getting IOS updates

All your app settings and even homepage arrangement (folder, etc) will remain the same. App data will be restored from backup. It's only the actual apps themselves that need to be redownloaded.

Think of this as being similar to the offload app feature introduced in maybe iOS 12? App data remains on device. The actual apps are sometimes offloaded to free up space.

You don't have to download the apps one by one. iOS will automatically download them for you after iTunes restore is completed. It's a good idea to charge it and remain connected to wifi while it finishes the app reinstalls.

I hadn’t either until 2 years ago when I got my XS Max. I was amazed! And it only took a few minutes. I think it’s fantastic.

This direct transfer method only works for the iPhone.

For iPad, automatic setup transfers some things (e.g. wi-fi settings) but you still need to go through iCloud for backup/restore.

I used to think so too, but my recent new devices have been set up with a combination of the Quick Setup (is that what it’s called when you when you point the camera at the cloud looking thing? I forget) and restoring from an iCloud backup. The new device seems to have everything the old one did, so long as you have all the boxes you need checked for what’s included in your iCloud backup.

In my experience, iTunes on Windows is terrible and backups and restores through it fail frequently. That’s why I switched to iCloud backups.

Yes, iCloud backup does restore majority from the old device. Personally, haven't really had any issues with iTunes encrypted backup and restore.

I think some things like keychain is synced rather than restored via iCloud, though. It's annoying for me when I need to log in to sites while my device still hasn't finished syncing passwords. Iirc, email logins in the Mail app are also restored by iTunes whereas with iCloud restore, I've had to re-enter my passwords.

If I need to get up and running quickly or I don't have fast unlimited wifi, I use iTunes. If I need some cruft removed or I'm not in a hurry, I use iCloud.

NEW PROBLEM:

Hey guys,

I bought a new iPad 9th generation I want to setup, full specs here: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP849?locale=en_GB

But I've got no idea how the Apple ID account works when I transfer from my current iPad Mini 3 to the new iPad 9th generation?

Do I need to create a new Apple ID because it's a new device?

I decided to reply to this thread instead of creating a new thread because I didn't want to take up forum space.

You can use the same Apple ID with multiple devices, so no need for a new one.
Thank you for your reply!

In addition to the iPad Mini 3, I already have an iPod Touch and a Mac Mini mid2011 on this Apple ID... How many devices can I have on the same Apple ID?

I'm considering setting up a new Apple ID for this new iPad 9th gen because I'm giving the iPad Mini 3 to a family member... How would this work?

A lot. There doesn’t seem to be a limit. I’ve once had 3 iPhones and 10 iPads on my account. Caveat, auto-updates and music/video iTunes purchases seem to be limited to just 5-6 devices.

Use your own Apple ID for the iPad you’re keeping.

It’s the iPad Mini 3 that you’re giving away where you should Erase All Content and Settings (Settings - General - Reset) and set up with a new Apple ID.

Is it possible for me to keep the iPad Mini 3 with the current Apple ID and change it in the future?

I want to setup the new iPad 9th gen with the Apple ID I'm using on the iPad Mini 3. Is this okay if I want to change the Apple ID on the iPad 9th gen in the future?

Sorry about my questions, but I just want to make sure! 😭😭😭

Yup. It's possible.

Easiest is when you set up the iPad 9 for the first time, put it near the mini, and the mini will ask you to quick start setup for the new iPad (assuming the mini has iOS11 or newer). Then the iPad 9 will be the exact duplicate of the mini 3. After the whole process and making sure everything is working fine, you can reset the mini and set it up as a separate device, or you can continue using both with the same account.

The only caution is, which Apple ID that you have that have all your data like your app purchases, music/movie purchases, photos, iCloud backup, etc. You have to make sure you remember that and keep that AppleID safe. If both iPads are only going to be used by you, best is to just use the same Apple ID. I would only use a different AppleID if the iPad will be used by a different user (best way is to reset it to factory first before giving it to the other user).

Yes. However, it can be problematic sharing the same iCloud account with another person.

For example, if you have iMessage and FaceTime enabled, the Mini 3 will get those, too. You only have one iCloud storage so if you’re using the 5GB free tier, that will still be used by the Mini 3. iCloud Keychain/saved passwords also sync by default.

My suggestion is to sign in with your current Apple ID on the iPad 9th gen, make sure everything is working fine after after setup/restore, and remove your iCloud account or reset the Mini 3 before you give it away.

Okay I tried putting the two iPads next to each other, but it didn't work.

I'll do as you say and use the same Apple ID on both iPads.

I just upgraded my iCloud to 50gb so hopefully it works.

I be,once they have to be under the same user ID to do this transfer. I prefer doing a encrypted backup as I have had problems getting my music to move using this method. I have always had to re-sync all of my music via iTunes
