I decided to opt out of my service at ATT and take out the sim card like everyone says to use it just for the ipod, safari, etc. just recently my iphone (w/o sim card) was stolen from my dorm room and i was wondering whether there was a way to retrieve it.

I never used programs to track the location of my phone when i was using it (such as Ihound).

So is it pointless to go searching for it? Can the local police, at&t or itunes help me?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but even if you had kept the original SIM in the phone there would be no way of getting it back.

The only chance you have is catching the thief in the act or somehow finding out who has it and comparing your serial/IMEI from the box to that on the phone you suspect is yours.

At that point you can TRY to get the police involved. From what I've read they're not too interested in stolen iPhones.

I think you should contact your service provider for two reasons:

    1) if the thief was stupid enough to keep the sim card in the phone they maybe able to trace him.

    2) some companies can deactivate phones, so if you contact them before he/she jailbreak the phone then at least you can insure he/she does not enjoy it.

Sorry for that it really sucks ha!!

Unfortunately, no. Phone companies will do nothing to help you. Take a look at all the lost/stolen iPhone threads around here.

The only reason you need to contact your provider is to get a new SIM card and phone.

I don't know about you guys, but in the UK i am sure that some companies have a system which shut down phones. I never lost a phone (touch wood) but i have heard stories and some companies advertising this.

Phone companies don't care. They just want their money. Sad, but true. I hope you get your iPhone back!

Yeah, in the UK they can block the phone's IMEI so it isn't operable in the UK (had this done to a phone I lost) but there has to be a sim card in the phone. Also the phone still works outside the UK.

Don't know if the US has a similar system though, I don't think it does.

i just had my ipod stolen:mad:. call apple and they will ask you for serial number and stuff and then send it to the "stolen ipods department". after that, you need to go to your quote" local authority such as police department" and give them the serial number. the police apparently have a special department thta work w/ apple stolen ipods department to track ur ipod/ once they find it (hopefully!) they mil it to you.
