I will be buying the iPad 3 and wanted to know if I should take it to school.
My friend took her ipad 2 and left it in her locker but says she doesn't feel it's safe. I will probably use it for music class if I bring it to school.

I am unsure if I should... Please help!!

High School or below - No
College - Yes

When practically every kid in school starts using iPads then it'll be safe. Otherwise, kids are immature and evil so you're setting yourself up to get it stolen or broken.

News flash: if you leave you expensive stuff unattended, it'll probably get stolen. Even in college! And if the locker is the kind you can pop open with a screwdriver, or the staff has access to, I wouldn't feel safe leaving it there either.

But don't let that stop you from bringing it and using it, if you have a real use for it. You just can't be careless.

...:)

High school,, I am able to take it to class and sit it with my phone ... Do you guys think that would be a good option?

if you're willing to keep it with you at all times then sure. i use to bring in an expensive laptop back in the days for class but thinking back now its not worth the hassle.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

I haven't used an iPad in school- but I do use a laptop and not so much paper anymore.

I used to bring a laptop to high school. It was pretty useful and I felt safe but I was in a good school and I never left it unattended (mostly never).

Things I would ask is:
Do all teachers let you use it/approve of it being there?
Does it really benefit learning?
Are you in a school where things go missing?
Do things break easily at your school?
College vs uni (if it's uni, there is less problems imo)?

If you do take it to school, I would looking into the possibility of insuring it and the cost involved.

Also, if you do bring it, I would personally bring a bluetooth keyboard if you are using it to reduce paper use. Typing on an iPad throughout class is plain torture. Or buy a very good stylus (not a fat tipped one) and find an app that allows hand writing (do they even exist?)

Funny quip, I remember throwing that laptop on the floor and smashing it after a few years of use. God that was satisfying!

It's not safe in high school. What happens when you go to gym class? You can't keep it on you then. :(

You don't need an iPad for HIGH SCHOOL. All you need is paper and pencil to take notes. Besides, the teachers would probably think you are playing games on your iPad.

If you are a college student, that's different story since your audience is a professor and not a teacher. You sometimes NEED an internet capable device for college lectures. You do not NEED an iPad for high school (unless it is a school iPad educational program of some sort).

For college use (or high school), I don't see why not - just make sure it's within your sight at all times and have Find My iPhone installed, just in case it does get stolen.

I wouldn't risk it. More ability for distractions than for improving class.
Depends. As time goes on, they'll be just as, (if not more), common than the laptop.

True, but I have a friend who uses one with a stylus (yes, a stylus) and takes notes and does homework on it. It's more efficient and saves money. :)

I would say its use would be very minimal considering in a high school setting with relatively small class size. In college, it is very common to have 200 to 300 per class in a lecture auditorium.

To think back, I rarely see any high school teacher don't print out paper notes to students. In college, professors expect you to print out notes YOURSELF and have an internet access device to google some random concept that comes up during a lecture.

Just protect it in a case and be sure you are securing it somewhere when not in use, and you should be fine.

I live in the country, it's a small high school.
It wouldn't be at my desk because we have to have Our phones sort of out the front.

If you keep it with you at all times, or have a bank vault like lock on your locker, yes. Otherwise, no, it's a bit risky.

Too easy to steal.

Im in high school. As long as you take good care of it and make sure someone's watching it at all times, you should be fine. My friends always take theirs to history class in order to take notes. Out of a class of 21, about 3 or 4 have them.

My senior year of high school (when I first got my iPad) I would take it with me to classes. Even in college I take it with me. But in both cases I always kept it on my person in either my backpack or in my hands. I never let it out of my sight (which means I wouldn't put it in my locker either). Maybe I was being paranoid, but I never lost it or got it stolen that way ;)

Would a high school even allow it? When I was in high school teachers would get mad about cell phones being in class I could imagine what a iPad would do, especially with all the games you can get with it.

I don't think high school is a good environment for it quite frankly.. risky because it could get stolen and/or damaged.

I pretty sure the high school would allow it to be in the class room. In music our teacher encourages us to use our iPhone/iPod/iPad (if we have one)... For when we do work in groups using apps she chooses..

I'm a worried though ;/

Obviously schools vary, but if your high school is like mine was, you should be able to just throw it in your backpack. Then just make sure the backpack is always with you (if you get up, take it, etc)...that way you've always got it on you, and it can't get stolen.

I used to do this with things like my PSP back when I was a freshman

I would never bring an iPad to a High School. If you do, you might find out why the hard way...

I take my 3DS and iPhone to school I know they are safe... My ds stays in my bag.. And I take my phone to every class. We don't take our bags around because we carry books, diaries and net books ( they kinda suck). We leave our bags near our lockers. :)

Man I used to get my Walkman taken away in high school just for bringing it. Now they're allowed to bring phones and iPads. I feel old.
