Hello to everyone, I am really in need of some advice.

I am running a mid 2010 mac pro 2 x 2.4 ghz quad core intel zeon with 24gb of ram and a hd5879 1024 mb graphics card. I also have 4 2tb drives in the bays.

I am wondering if there is anyway I can increase the performance / boot time of my machine with the following components.

Samsung 840 evo 250gb ssd with an apricorn velocity solo x2 pcie card. Also a ocw drive bay sata sledge if that would be a better option instead of the solo x2 card.

Intake KT4004 usb 3.0 pcie card.

My problem is what would be the optimum placement for these cards in the pie slots to give the best performance.

I apologise if my question seems naive, but I gather if i place them in the incorrect order or wrong slot this could have a negative impact on my system. As a guideline my current system boots from cold in around 54 seconds.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

    Thank you.

Get yourself some used 5690s, $300-400 for a pair used now.

Look at the thread about NGFF PCIESSDs and compare your needs with speeds available.

Thank you for the information, I wasn't looking to upgrade the graphics card - but the link you gave me has given me some new ideas.

A low cost option / alternative to the velocity solo for an existing ssd would be this here:

But if speed really matters big time and cost is not an option, I would go with this one here:

Many thanks to all that have given me such good advice.
I have decided to go with the solo X2 card with a samsung 840 evo 250gb ssd.
After trying both the sledge not the data drive bay and the solo x2 PCIE Card, the difference between them was less than a second, but the pie card has the edge when doing serious number crunching on the mac.
My machine boots up in around 45 seconds from cold and Im happy with that. Looking into the future I can see that I will be upgrading the graphics, but for now I will stick with what I have.
    Once again thanks tall.

I am running a mid 2010 mac pro with a Samsung 840 evo 250gb ssd connected through an apricorn velocity solo x2 pcie card. Sounds very good to me both in performance and reliability.
