Advice on ordering new 21.5 iMac 2017

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a new 21.5 4K iMac.
I would like to use this for mainly video editing 1080p to start with but moving to 4K in future. MSOffice and general web browsing. I usually keep my iMac for 8 - 10 years before upgrading so getting spec right at beginning is important.

I'm currently looking at this spec, i7 boosted to 4.2, 16 gig ram and 512SSD. Would you advise this enough or should I drop the processor speed and boost the ram?

It's all a question of what your budget is. But, on the 21.5 inch model, I would buy as much RAM as you can afford since it is (essentially) not user accessible. Over 8-10 years, the added cost of upping the RAM will average out to very little. And, if the choice is between processor and RAM, I would upgrade the RAM over getting the i7 processor.

I have £2000 to spend. I can get iMac with 10% off with student discount. If push to £2200 I can get both i7 and 32gb ram. But would it be worth having the both? Will I notice much difference having i7 over i5?

For video editing and later 4k editing, yes go with the i7.

The 21.5" model can handle up to 32GB of memory so order what you feel you will need. You do need to be happy with your purchase for the next few years and the i7 will do this for you.

What's stopping you from going with the 27"? It seems like a much better choice for editing.
