My family has an Air 13" (early 2015) that somehow started a software update overnight. I'm not sure of the details, but when waking this morning the white apple logo is on the black screen with a progress bar stuck (or seemingly so, not moving in a couple of hours) at approximately 40% of its length.

Rebooting shows the same progress bar, which in a few seconds advances to the same ~40%. If I boot is safe mode (hold shift key) it asks me for region and wi-fi details and, after a few clicks, ends up on a migration assistant type screen. On option on the migration screen is a disk named "Macintosh OS". I don't really want to "migrate" files and would rather keep the existing files that should still be there.

What do people recommend? Should I go through with the "migration" step in safe mode, or is there something else I should try?
