I am considering buying the iPad Air 3 and am interested in using that when out and about, along with my iPhone 7. Thus far I have only toyed with an iPad - my wife seems happy with the 2011 iPad 2 - and have otherwise been depending on my MacBook Pro (2015) for most things.

To give the iPad Air 3 a good chance of being loved I want to make sure that l've got maximum connectivity with the iPhone 7 with its lightning connector and the MacBook Pro (2015) with its USB-3 port. Transferring files, including photos and video, is obviously desired, without recourse to wifi which would not always be available.

    What should I get?

A keyboard/cover is also on the list, and probably that pen.

Looking forward to your replies - if I don't respond promptly that might be because I'm asleep - I should add that I'm in the UK but do travel across the pond from time to time so spending dollars is OK.

I'm not using USB-C, nor do I wish to at present.

Air 3 doesn't have USB-C. Airplay is the way to go (for me personally).

Thanks both. Yes, I know that the iPad Air 3 has a lightning connector, and not USB-C. That is the basis of my question about connectivity with the iPhone 7 (which has the lightning connector) and the MBP 2015 (which has USB 3, not USB-C.)

Can I easily shift files to and from the iPad Air 3 and those other two Apple products? And as an aside, can that be done to & from a windows laptop?

I will check out Airplay ...

iOS 13 is introducing support for USB flash drives. All you would need is a lightning to USB cable and you should be all set. Not sure what the transfer speeds will be over lightning though. I think it's USB 2.0 speed?? (needs confirmation for Air 3. I know the pro 10.5 is USB 3.0 speed) The other option suggested, Airdrop, will work well for wireless transfers of a file here and there.

Thanks. I later realised that I had not appreciated the functionality of the Files App that is native since ios 11, nor of Airdrop. I have tracked down the lightning to USB cable sold by SanDisk that also functions as a USB stick with memory that might tip the balance towards buying the less expensive 64GB version
