You're wrong. He's spending an EXTRA $122 for the phone. If he spends $400 the first time and $850 the second time, he would have to sell the phone for $1250 to break even. (Taxes excluded) the only way to make money on this deal is if he DIDNT WANT the phone and was staying on contract anyway so didn't care if he used his subsidy.

You're wrong.

Situation A: he does nothing with Craigslist and keeps his phone. He's out $400 for the phone.

Situation B: he buys two phones and sells one for $1200.
400+850-1200= 50. He's out $50.

Thus in situation B he still has a phone and a net savings of $350. (Plus/minus tax stuff)

He's paying $122 ON TOP OF THE $422 HE ALREADY PAID.

let break it down for you..

"Day 1, customer has no phone".. THEN.
1. buys the phone on contract, 399+ tax = 422.94 (negative out of his pocket)
2. sells the phone on CL, 1200 (positive)
3. 1200 (sale on CL) - 422.94 (original phone) = 777.06 (positive, u with me?)

*BREAKEVEN POINT. at this point you are back to day 1, with no phone, but with 777.06 in your pocket extra from the CL sale.

4. now he needs a phone, so he buys one out of pocket, 849 +tax = 899.94
5. use the extra 777.06 from the CL sale and use that towards the expense. so 899.94 - 777.06 = 122.08 (out of pocket)

now, OP has spent 122.08 with exact same phone versus if he bought the phone only 422.94 on day one.. That's basically 300.86 savings because he made the CL sale.

I have one coming from Apple and one reserved at the store, both unlocked 128 GB models. I made the reservation as a hedge against shipping delays.

I'm going to list the store one on kijiji.ca, a free local classifieds board owned by eBay. I've sold 3 used Macs through them with no incident. Meet in a public place, use a safe money transfer method.

I should be able to make a few hundred, and if I don't get a decent offer I'll just return it unopened to the store and make someone very happy.

You just dismiss the $400 for the first phone? That never left his pocket? It cost him $450. Vs $400

OMG you're dense.

Situation A he has a phone but lost $400

Situation B he has a phone but lost $50.

Since in most worlds $50 to pay for a phone is a better thing than paying $400 for that same phone, Situation B is financially more appealing.

The OP would re-coup the original $399 he spent on the phone by selling his phone on Craigslist for $1200. That's where the $777 comes I'm at. So he's SAVING money by doing it this way. Actually he's saving over $300...

It's simple math and it's also stuff people don't think if sometimes...

OP if I were you I'd do it on you are going to only have an out of pocket cost of around $125 compared to $425. You may have to wait a little longer to get the phone, but still... You're going to be getting an unlocked iphone 6 for way less than $200

OMG I'm done... I hope to deal with you someday. LMFAO

I know it isn't directed to me and I get what you are saying but offering someone 1200 for a phone, which you already paid $400+taxes for and will have to pay $850+ taxes for another phone isn't that great of a deal. Sure you will have a net gain in the end (if the person is legit) but it is risky and not worth it.

Wow, he's GETTING THE $400 for the first phone BACK by selling it on Craigslist.

Ok you pay $400 for that phone, then sale it on
CL for $1200. You take that original $400 out of the $1200 and have $800 left over for the new phone... He HAS THE $400 back IN HIS POCKET NOW!!!

not over $300 because of taxes (he would have to pay taxes on the $400 and the $1200 unless he lives in a tax free state)

This I do agree with... It is a big risk, but the OP WILL be saving $300 in the long run if he does it. He basically has a net gain of around $300

hence why I said, for the savings he's getting $300.06, he's basically paying for his security, sanity and patience. unless in only have to wait a few weeks, I couldn't do it... I need the phone now.

He won't pay taxes on the $1200 because he's selling on craigslist..

Worst case is the OP PAYS $400 plus tax for the phone so say $440 then he sales it for $1200 and makes $760 of that plus his original $440
Back I'm his hands. Them he buys a new phone
UNLOCKED with that $750 and take the extra money he needs OUT OF THE ORIGINAL $440 that he just received back for selling his phone for $1200...

He's making out pretty darn good

If you are a poor college student, then I would do it. If not, just keep it. You have to ask yourself if it's worth $300 to wait another month or so for the phone. Side note: don't tell your gf or wife or else they will tell you to sell.

The benefit is $350 minus the sales tax on $850. (Since he has to pay the tax on the first $400 phone regardless of whether he keeps or sells it.)

The posts here are so ridiculously stupid about people "using a handgun instead of cash to pay".

What do you guys think you have to do on craigslist. If they guy wants you to meet in a dark alley with three out of four lights broken... yeah. Don't do it. Meet the guy at a mall, or very public location (preferably not a parking lot).

You read about one deal going bad on craigslist out of the tens of thousands that happen DAILY (if not more) and all of the sudden craigslist is a bad place. Workplaces get robbed, crazy murder suicides happen with disgruntled employees. You all work... do you worry all day that Joey from two cubicles over is going to come to work tomorrow morning and blow you away before he offs himself? I mean it happens, right?

Some people are just absolutely ridiculous.

Exactly, but it's still a net gain of around $300, but you've got to wait to get the phone if you
Do sale

Also, OP, my gut tells me you can get more than $1200 for my phone at launch. Supplies are ridiculously limited. That's home much I sold a Gold 5S for, and I could have gotten more based on the subsequent texts I got while driving home from the mall post sale.

Yes exactly so he's gonna MAKE money by doing it, but he's gonna have to wait for the phone instead of having it on launch day

I've got agree with you. I've seen some bids on ebay going upwards of $3000

SOme local craigslist ad says willing to buy 6+ any carrier any size and color for $2000 cash on hand.

Sorry I meant, he has to pay $850 + taxes to get a new phone. The $399 phones are $850. The total net gain is less than $300 though.

Oh I got you. It's a lot of hassle. Plus he'll be without a new phone for a while
