It might be that Migration Assistant just won't work any longer with a drive from an "OS that is that old".

I don't think he got far enough to draw that conclusion. He said "I do see the g5 but I can't open it or anything". That indicates the ethernet connection is working, because he can see the G5 on the network. But he can't open the shared disk. So I think it's likely that file sharing has not been properly configured on the G5. We need to find out what version of the operating system is installed on the G5. I believe the first G5 shipped with MacOSX 10.2, later models shipped with 10.4 and they all can be upgraded to 10.5.

Yes, pulling the drive from the G5 is one solution, but I think we need more information before recommending that.

G5 supported Mac OS X 10.2.7 - 10.5.8, I believe he'll have to be on 10.4 or higher for it work properly. IIRC, there was some Sharing tweaks that cut support for 10.3 and earlier.

Ok, I got the transfer to work. I'm not 100% sure what I did differently, but got the the stuff I wanted.

New problem is I have a really hard time connecting to my phones hotspot. The g5 connects instantly. The mini keeps searching, it recognizes the hotspot but has only connected twice. Is there a trick?

Sorry, have never used wifi on my Mini, only ethernet. But there are some lengthy discussions about wireless issues on the 2018 Mini (both wifi and bluetooth) and they may be affected by the peripherals you have connected to either the USB-A or USB-C ports.

Have you tried using Bluetooth instead of wifi to connect to the phone? That is how I have used my MacBook Air with my iPhone as a hotspot in the past. I believe you can also use a wired connection. See this:

Turns out, I think anyway, I just needed to switch to 5 ghz. Mini seemed to pick that right up. I think I'm all straightened out, for the time being anyway!!

Thanks again everyone for being patient with all my dumb questions!!

Enjoy the new computer! And check back in after you've had a chance to get used to it, would be interesting to hear your impressions coming from the G5. :)
Thanks! I tell you one thing I noticed, other than starting up a lot faster, is that the mini is ALOT quieter!! 😁😅

One advantage of the G5 was that it made a good space heater on cold days. 😂 Seriously, if you were using the G5 every day, you might see some significant savings on your annual electric bill with the Mini.

I am a PowerPC fan - as you might see from the systems on my signature - but even I am shocked you were using a G5 as a main machine to this day!

Was looking for a picture of my G5 but couldn't find one. This is more fun anyway, my studio in 2003 (a year or two before I got the G5). I hate to think how much I spent on all that technology! The grey G4 is the only thing that I still have today, but it doesn't work anymore.

And I bet your Mini is 20x faster than the combined power of all the hardware in the picture, at 100th of the footprint and power consumption :)

Only 20x? 😂 I also had a titanium PowerBook G4 at the time, that was one of my favorite computers but it was blown out when I connected it to a big theatrical DLP projector with bad grounding. Fortunately, my employer paid for that but there were no Titaniums to be had so I ended up going to CompUSA that night and buying an Aluminum G4 (which had just been introduced).
