I’ve never used the Affinity apps but I’m planning to give them a try today as it happens.

I already know that it doesn’t have a Digital Asset Manager so can’t replace Lightroom but, boy, would I jump on board if it did. Could finally cancel my Creative Cloud subscription.
I use CaptureOne as the replacement for Lightroom.

I’m not sure they have ever actually said that. Do you have a link to where they did? That would be epic if they released a DAM.
Huh. Well having just a look through their forums for the first time in a while there seem to be quite a lot of people who, like me, very definitely remember them saying they were working on one. But everything official I can find now seems a bit more noncommittal. So I guess development has slowed a bit? That’s a shame.

I have been following the potential of this for years, and I have never seen anything official, though I have seen a lot of people assuming it ‘is coming’. No one can ever point me to an official quote or statement or even passing mention though.. thought you had maybe seen something!

I've updated Affinity Photo to 1.10.3 via the Apple App Store and its blank, I have no tools or anything... If I start a new project I get the artboard window and that's it.

I've updated Designer and Publisher via the App itself as I got those through Affinity and they work perfectly.
Fine on my end but im on Catalina

I’m absolutely certain I have! But it all seems to have disappeared. All I can find now are ‘maybe’s and ‘we’ll see’s. Which are still more than the outright ‘no’s they whenever anyone asks about video or motion graphics, but doesn’t exactly give much cause for optimism in the near term.

I would consider switching, but AFAIK, there's no way to import my large image library of non-destructively edited image files into C1 unscathed.

If I was starting fresh I'd certainly consider C1.

As it is, I'm happy with LR and the frequent updates with new features. I bit their subscription bullet a year or two ago and have no complaints.

Unfortunately Affinity is still nowhere near as good as Adobe when it comes to typography. The optical kerning in adobe software is absolutely essential for anyone working with type. If Affinity would have well proportioned type I would switch in a heartbeat.
I so wanted it to succeed but ultimately the whole Affinity suite is just gaining dust on my hard drive. They've overpromised on pro features and underdelivered. A pity.

Yes! But for me...only if I could easily import my large Lightroom library of non-destructively edited image files unscathed.

These are amazing apps. Great to see immediate support for latest hardware. Adobe, despite continual promotion from Apple, will release their luke warm updates sometime in 2022.

Yes this would be an issue for me too. And lightroom is really a pretty amazing editing application - Affinity would have to blow it out of the water to make a big impact.

Off topic but; I dont mind paying a sub, so that’s not really a factor for me. What I want is lightroom for the iPad to be able to edit from a hard drive the same as classic can, and for round tripping in to my choice of external editor (wouldn’t mind PS if it was up to the same standard as AF was on the iPad, but it’s not yet), to be possible in the same manner as the mac can. If an Affinity DAM catered for me in this respect then I’ll go through the pains of whatever I need to do with my 10 plus years lightroom library to make the change, as I did with the demise of aperture.

On GPU side the new M1 chip while looking super impressive does not seens to surpass the RTX 3xxx, even not the RTX 2xxx.

it’s not about the total “raw” power. The fact that it’s using a very fast unified memory and is part of the same SOC means it can be used for many more smaller tasks/data payloads without the latency and overhead of discrete GPU. So this comparison is not quite right For these kinds of applications.

I hate Adobe as the next guy but let's be honest, Affinity is nowhere near it and probably never will. Their focus on speeding up zoom for the gazillionth time on lastest Macs over long requested essential features is a testament of their ambitions.

Nice, I've never really managed to get into Affinity Photo, I much prefer Capture One for my non destructive edits and DAM (and with panorama stitching and HDR coming to Capture One 22 other than maintaining my earlier photos Lightroom Classic will be gathering serious dust).

Still, good to see some serious performance on the new Mac's. Am going to have to see how Capture One goes on the M1 Pro.

For me, that conversion process of keeping LR non-destructive edits intact into an Affinity DAM would have to be automated. Or at least majorly semi-automated, with some user intervention. That would take a long time to convert everything.

Still...being happy with with LR and how it has evolved, especially over the last year or two (complex masking, for example), I'm OK with the $100/yr. Using LR for a dozen+ years, most everything I do involves muscle memory without too much thought. There would have to be a really good reason to toss that aside and start over with a new editor/DAM. Right now I'm not seeing it.

Affinity apps are the best value apps you can buy right now for the Mac. Outstanding quality and value.
Agreed. Sure, they don't have everything Adobe has, but for the vast majority of uses, including professional use, they're good enough. Add in the fact that they are a one-off purchase, not a subscription, then Affinity becomes even more attractive.

I wonder if Serif ever fixed their apps so they don't bounce on the dock 20+ times when you start them on a M1-based Mac? Of course they blame it on Apple, yet Pixelmator starts darn near instantly. It's annoying to say the least.

Nope and it is pushing me back to Adobe. Photoshop 'feels' faster at many operations than Affinity Photo, and the tools are more logical.. or I am more familiar.

That only affected the apps when installed via the App Store. the apps installed directly from Affinity did not have that problem. It looked like the App Store installer was doing something odd that confused the Affinity apps on runtime. I haven't seen that problem in a while.

The tools are hidden. Try press the 'Tab' key on your keyboard.

Still can’t do any right click, control click, option click, command click in their apps. FFS useless. I’m not going to go to the fricken tool bar for options that could be brought up really quickly.
