One final newbie question from me for a while regarding AE. I have two text layers, each one a letter, and need to have them overlap as shown in the attached png. Specifically, I need the portions where they overlap to be darker as shown. How is this accomplished in AE? Thanks!

Try blends and/or opacity.

I tried blends (specifically overlay) and it worked, but the color of the overlapping portion is too light. Is there any way to change the color of the overlay so that it's darker?

Did you try combinations of both blends and opacity?
The other option is to duplicate one of the layers and create a track matte to get the color value/look you desire.
Which would be the overlap of course.
