I have really been liking how light weight the Air is, that is the reason I bought it and didn't switch back to Samsung yet. The single camera is fine for me, not as good as multiple cameras but it works just fine. The single speaker is fine 98% of the time. Battery life has been fantastic on this phone.

However, I finally found a real shortcoming with the Air. I live in a hot weather state (North Carolina). It has finally gotten to temps during the day of 90F on a "cool" day to 100+F on others. If I take my phone out of my pocket to use it, outside in direct sunlight, this phone gets massively hot very quickly, in only a few minutes. So hot that at times putting it back into my pocket didn't seem good enough, I would power it down to be safe. At first I thought it was a fluke but it kept happening. Then this last weekend I saw an article on a tech site talking about this exact issue with the Air. Apparently because it is so thin, and how the internals were done, it can't hold up to the combination of direct sunlight with extreme heat temps.

Still love the Air and glad I bought it as summer won't last forever but ya that's a real negative for those of us that live in very hot locations in summer. If I still lived in PA for example this would not be an issue as the intensity of the sun in the summer even at 90F isn't a big deal like it is in NC (plus low 80's is typical PA summer weather).
 
Or it could be the laws of thermodynamics - passive cooling can't make heat go from hot to hot...
Nobody is arguing that passive cooling can magically defy physics, but material properties still matter. Aluminum dissipates heat over an order of magnitude faster than titanium. A hyper-thin titanium chassis means you have less overall mass to act as a heat sink, and a metal that acts more like an insulator than a conductor. The titanium enclosure is definitely part of the problem

Compare that to the 17 Pro, which takes the exact opposite approach: a thicker chassis, vastly more thermal mass, and an internal architecture designed to actually spread heat rather than trap it

Do you use and Google or meta apps?
 
That is not unique to the Air.
My mini had horrible thermals more so than the air. If I am charging, using GPS, it's on the windshield with the sun shining, then it's going to overheat. However, I place the phone in front of the vent it prevents overheating. But then if I use heating function... then no.

I have a few Google apps installed but I don’t let them run in the background. When I’m done using them I close them. I use Google apps so it’s really easy to switch to Android when I want.

Probably should switch off background refresh for those apps, and see if they make a difference.

Cross compatibility does come at a cost.

I turned all background app refresh off years ago and noticed zero difference other than the fact that it doesn’t consume battery life.

Also, my Air is by far the coolest iPhone I’ve had since… maybe iPhone 5/6/7? Definitely my iPhone X through 16 Pro Max all ran very warm at times.
 
My 15 Pro overheats a lot. Even with the AC running in my car, it routinely stops charging (via cable, not MagSafe) at 80% because of heat.

Would also recommend Low Power Mode to anyone looking to reduce power/heat.
