I guess that the title says it all.

I have an Iphone 3S, and just recently I did an upgrade to get the latest OS.
After the upgrade, the phone is much slower than before: Apps take a long time to open, text messages are opening slower and it feels generally sluggish.

I still have 3GB of free space left on it.

Is anyone else experiencing the same issues?

True, its slower than the 4s, but after OS upgrade even slower than before the upgrade.

Can the phone not keep up with the newer operating system?

Slower phone.. It's to be expected. Upgrade or live with it.

Im sure if you did not have a zillion apps that you don't use and pix/vids it will much smoother. Especially at 3GB free left it won't help either.

Unfortunately, I think you've been shafted by a poorly optimised update. My brother and I both have a 3GS, they both ran quite well on early versions of iOS 5, particularly 5.0.1. I kept mine on 5.0.1 to jailbreak it, while my brother updated his to 5.1 and then to 5.1.1- his 3GS is now dog slow while mine is still running quite nicely.

It's a minor update so it shouldn't be causing any problems. Have you tried completely resetting the device (wiping everything) and setting it up as a new phone, then manually syncing your apps, contacts, music, and whatever instead of restoring?

Same thing here!

I had the exact same thing happen when I upgraded. What I ended up doing was restoring my phone and then reinstalled all of the apps that I use (was actually kind of refreshing to get rid of a bunch of crap apps that were lingering on the device). Anyways, long story short, the restore seemed to fix the speed issues I was having.

I'm assuming it was related to a defragmenting issue -- over time as more and more files are added to your device and as updates get added, files will inevitably get "bent out of shape" or misplaced and it just simply takes longer to do anything. The restore will essentially reorganize the phone's files and make many of the simple process quicker.

Good Luck!

It shouldn't be... It'd be pretty poor if Apple was selling a phone that can't keep up with their own OS updates.
It can keep up.. It's working and useable, just requires more patience. Besides.. 3GS is a old dog now.. Damn right if their iOS5 is geared towards 4 and 4s and won't work as smoothly on their older devices..

Funny, i've noticed my iPhone 4S lags or "jumps" a bit here and there now a days after the new iOS update. That's unexpected for a dual cored A5..

It has to be something with your phone, I have a 3Gs and it's running perfectly on IOS 5.1.1, maybe better than any other iOS version, all the people hating on the 3Gs.....take a break.....

New Iphone 3GS Born with 5.1.1 Slow and lagging

Hi i just picked up a new boxed 3GS, as my other 3GS just died.

It came with 5.1.1 and Icloud.

But it is much slower than the 3GS i had before with ios 5.0.1, Skype is really like the phone is out of memory, IM+ slow as H... sometimes when move around in menus it is lagging.

Any suggestions ?

Taking it to the shop,... i worry they will send it somewhere as it is just a typucal retailer.

No issue with my 4s.

It had 5.1 out of the box which i updated to 5.1.1 recently.

Still stock.
