The long-awaited AirPower charging mat, which is designed to charge the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods all at once, did not make an appearance at today's iPhone-centric event that saw the launch of new iPhone XS and iPhone XR models.

Apple did not mention the AirPower at all on stage, despite the fact that it's now been an entire year since the device was announced in September 2017 alongside the iPhone X.

In addition to failing to give an update on the AirPower, Apple has also essentially scrubbed all mentions of the device from its website. Searching for AirPower doesn't bring up anything, and the only place AirPower is listed appears to be on the page for the AirPods.

In a section of Apple's AirPods site the AirPower is depicted alongside a mention of an optional wireless charging case, which is listed as "currently unavailable." The wireless AirPods charging case was meant to be sold alongside the AirPower to enable AirPods wireless charging.

At this point, it's not clear what's going on with the AirPower. Apple originally said that the device would launch in 2018, but it seems like alongside new iPhones would have been the opportune moment.

It's clear there are still technical details to be worked out, and earlier this year, rumors suggested that Apple was still working on issues with overheating and dealing with multi-device circuitry. At the time, Apple was said to be aiming for a September launch, but no AirPower is coming in September.

Apple still has a few more months to meet its 2018 deadline for the AirPower, so it's possible we'll see the device debut via press release in October, November, or December.

I'm hoping they have restarted the entire project with the goal of delivering true, wireless power over the air without charging mats. For now we can just use third party chargers. What sucks is the people who have been waiting and haven't purchased something else.

I cannot find any details whether the Series 4 will support AirPower. I was hoping my Series 3 would get to charge on it. Now I am getting ride of my Series 3.

Too bad. I would have loved one if I could get a new Airpod case that would work with it.

Anyone miss the Apple that used to announce products with the phrase "Available today" at the end.

Whilst most products do eventually make an appearance. Apple has pre-announced a number of products in recent years that have seemingly taken longer to eventually come to market. It's not great for their reputation so they should just keep quiet.

Blimey! No doubt there are issues they are trying to resolve but to announce something so early was a bad move unless they thought they could resolve it. Having said that, and for the risk of being flamed, it's better they don't release an inferior product and ensure it's safe. I can only presume they have encountered an issue they were not expecting when they first announced it.

Everyone that spoke ill of the charging mats that don't do everything the Apple mat will do should feel real bad for those mean, mean words.

They said 2018. So, I don't think it's "safe" to assume anything other than it's not out yet as of 9/12/18.

Even if it comes out, it’s still horribly over priced (although given the fact that Apple is pushing a $1500 iPhone +$300 in protection for it, people will apparently buy anything...) and they seem to deliberately be avoiding the topic at all costs and removing almost every mention of it on their website.

I liken this to the Apple Watch Walkie-Talkie feature, which was announced at the AW S0 launch, never came to fruition and was shoved under a rug, and now Apple is pushing it as a completely new feature in watchOS 5.
