The long-awaited AirPower charging mat, which is designed to charge the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods all at once, did not make an appearance at today's iPhone-centric event that saw the launch of new iPhone XS and iPhone XR models.

Apple did not mention the AirPower at all on stage, despite the fact that it's now been an entire year since the device was announced in September 2017 alongside the iPhone X.

In addition to failing to give an update on the AirPower, Apple has also essentially scrubbed all mentions of the device from its website. Searching for AirPower doesn't bring up anything, and the only place AirPower is listed appears to be on the page for the AirPods.

In a section of Apple's AirPods site the AirPower is depicted alongside a mention of an optional wireless charging case, which is listed as "currently unavailable." The wireless AirPods charging case was meant to be sold alongside the AirPower to enable AirPods wireless charging.

At this point, it's not clear what's going on with the AirPower. Apple originally said that the device would launch in 2018, but it seems like alongside new iPhones would have been the opportune moment.

It's clear there are still technical details to be worked out, and earlier this year, rumors suggested that Apple was still working on issues with overheating and dealing with multi-device circuitry. At the time, Apple was said to be aiming for a September launch, but no AirPower is coming in September.

Apple still has a few more months to meet its 2018 deadline for the AirPower, so it's possible we'll see the device debut via press release in October, November, or December.

I have to agree with others that this is really disappointing. At least address the issue and be up front about the problem / delay, especially if you are going to wipe all mentions of the product. Lame.

Even if it comes out, it’s still horribly over priced (although given the fact that Apple is pushing a $1500 iPhone +$300 in protection for it, people will apparently buy anything...) and they seem to deliberately be avoiding the topic at all costs and removing almost every mention of it on their website.

I liken this to the Apple Watch Walkie-Talkie feature, which was announced at the AW S0 launch, never came to fruition and was shoved under a rug, and now Apple is pushing it as a completely new feature in watchOS 5.
How is something thats price has not been revealed yet overpriced?

Well that picture wont stay long on that Airpod's website since it shows the now discontinued iPhoneX, unless they update the picture with the new world background on the new iPhones. If Apple does that then maybe there is hope for it....

They said 2018. So, I don't think it's "safe" to assume anything other than it's not out yet as of 9/12/18.
Scrubbing all mentions from the website would indicate something is up.

I personally don't care. A charging mat isn't very exciting. Apple must have changed directions in terms of their charging research and development. I'm sure something better is coming along within a few years.

Just get the Samsung one :D

It’ll be announced in October.

I don’t understand the insane levels of outrage, this is an incredibly complex device that provides functionality that literally nothing else on the market does.

An under-deliver would be if Apple released it and it didn't work as intended. Apple won't release it until it works as promised. If they can't do that, they won't release it.
they have under delivered, it was an iPhone x feature to be able to charge it along with the earphones, so far it's still not posible.

This is exactly why Apple should not mention future products until they are actually ready. That is why Steve was so secretive, but things are clearly different nowadays.

Agreed. I don't criticize Cook as much as many others here do, and I think he's doing a fine job overall, but this is one thing he has changed that I really dislike. Apple used to announce products and features that were available same day, or same week. Now it seems Cook allows announcing things a year out or more.

I know from experience that software testing is complicated, and sometimes software features have to be pulled back - that's fine. But I don't see any reason to announce hardware in advance like that.

I suspect Cook pushed to announce the AirPower early as a signal to investors that Apple is taking wireless charging seriously.
