try rebooting from the OS disk and doing an archive install (which will re-install the OS with out erasing your data).

my laptop did this recently. a quick google search will give you more detailed instructions

Try booting from the system disc and doing a hard drive repair and permissions repair, don't reinstall until you've tried these.
