Are you setting up the phone as a new one or just restoring from a backup?

From what I can tell the crashlogs are kept for all your devices. But then again, I have not set up any of my devices as a new one...

yes, as a new iphone.....NOT from backup

The crash log isn't stored on the phone, it is on your computer. If you use a Mac you can see it through the console.app. I would figure in generating the new device name that it wouldn't delete existing data, it would create a new folder and begin putting the logs there.
