Man is part of nature, but believes himself above it. Hence we think our needs outweigh everything else's and start doing utterly stupid things like bottom trawling.

But your Beagle has no concept of the future or the damage he would be doing in his actions, so you can't really blame him.

Humans on the other hand have plenty of conceptual skills.

Surely the conceptual notions of past, present and future elevate human beings somewhat?

I agree about the bottom trawling.

A shark can sense electricity and smell blood nearly a mile away. A cheetah can run at 60mph. An ant can carry 50 times its own body weight. Humans conceptualise.

It's all about getting enough to eat. Our brains are our special talent. Shame we don't use them most of the time.

Yep. 90% of species on Earth will be gone in 100 years. Coral bleaching, bottom trawling and pollution ought to pretty much kill off the ocean food chain. Deforestation, desertification and pollution will do the same on land.

Personally, I don't worry nearly as much about what happens to trees and plantlife on land than I do what happens in the ocean. I really hope conserving ocean life become more of a priority. Just because we can't see it or directly see the negative effects of what we do to ocean life, doesn't mean it doesn't have an effect, and I think people fail to see this because people fail to see the damage directly and don't think they're being impacted, which is sad.

All thanks to one particularly stupid and selfish type of ape which thinks it's better than all the other species. And even then they won't get it.

Well, before then, I will be gone. Which is good thing as I don't have to witness that (I am sure others will though).

Almost blind river dolphin? Amazing it lasted as long as it did.

Nature always recovers. There's been at least three super die offs of life on this planet and the survivors always come back to fill all the nitches that were left unfilled.

Too bad that roaches are the life form most likely to see the last day of this planet.

Thank you Dynamic,
I agree wholeheartedly. I do it on a rather small scale but I see people all the time getting new things because they have to be better than the next person or that they saw in a magazine that whatever they have is out of fashion. It should be more about sustainability rather than style. Then again, we are apple users, are we not? Sad to say, we are only contributing to this cause. Gone are the days where owning a farm to raise what you needed.

If it wasn't China it would be elsewhere. Unless we start making things on the Moon it's always going to cause some form of damage. Our problem stems from our obsession with getting rid of things simply because there's something newer available instead of waiting until we need to replace the old one. And I know, I'm as guilty of that as everyone else.

Well, that and there being about twice as many people as the planet can sensibly support anyway. Every time an extra one of us is born, we take the room that another creature used to occupy.

Those greedy capitalists, oh wait....

Bingo, China doesnt have any rules or laws for the most part on the enviroment so this is perfect for corporate America's factories. Cheap labor with almost no regulation, allmost no polution laws and a communist govt that makes it allmost impossible for someone to stand up and say this is wrong.. China is going to be a enviromental disaster in 100 years wait and see. This is just the tip of iceberg. We will be seeing more of this.

Don't worry something (probably something Man has set in motion) will kill us down to manageable levels. We're at a boiling point and there's no way to turn down the heat. We're addicted to lifestyles which destroy entire ecosystems, but so separated from the destruction as to be completely mindless of it. Everything comes a nice package; clean, shiny and ready to consume. We don't see the blood, the exploit, the rape of the environment, and frankly we don't want to.

Even if we did want to acknowledge the consequences of our habits, turning back would require a huge conscious effort and yeah ...that'll happen. People wait for everyone else to do the right thing for them, doubting that their own "sacrifices" would make a difference, doubting that others would reciprocate.

What are ya gonna do though? We can't suddenly become a communal society; recycling, minimizing waste, lowering our overall negative enviromental footprint. That would require a huge conscious effort. "Honey where's the $#%$# remote!" We just wanna watch football, eat chips, go to work.. live life like those who came before us.. until one day our kids or their kids are gasping the poison air and puking up the tap water. How do you stop it?

How does Joe sixpack lower his negative impact? He wants to. Joe cares, but he doesn't know how. Who will tell him? Who can he trust? Who should he believe? Oh it's all so confusing. Meanwhile, he drives his SUV to Wallmart and picks up another 300 pieces of molded plastic in a typical shopping excursion.

Meteor? Disease? Volcanic winter? Nuclear? Global Warming related climatic problems? Somehow nature will cull the herd.

read an interesting article, the other day... about a giant ice shelf that broke free... august 05... (yeah, i dunno)... the thingy about it tho is... nowhere in the article was "global warming" even mentioned... except in one place, kinda in passing, almost dismissive... any comments on the implications of the facts of the story were meticulously crafted to downplay... justifying anyone out there who still wants/needs to think that "climate change" is nothing at all to be concerned about... n that such hysterics are a leftist conspiracy to spend your hard earned tax dollars on keeping god outta public schools... this is why aliens avoid open contact... that n we still mostly use PCs

:p
