….he mentioned that most of the people he assisted preferred the 38mm, including people who had placed pre-orders for the 42mm.

Or it could be that those people weren't sure whether the 42mm is the correct size so he saw more of those people than people who are confident that 42mm is the correct size and don't bother to go to the try ons. If so, it'd just be biased reporting.

When in doubt go bigger as far as Apple Watch is concerned if you are a man - most men can pull off a 42 where as most men will think 38mm is too small.

The size should be
For men - S, XS
For Woman - M, S

since Apple clearly wants every thing to be unisex, just went with M, S since they are more geared towards woman.

From the pictures, it looks like much bigger, but it is tiny compared to bigger watches from designers like Diesel.

I was pretty confident 38mm was the right choice for me and I did a try-on anyway, just to finally see it in person and compare band choices. That said, of course my example is just an anecdote, like anyone else's. From the shipping times, it does seem like the 42mm is selling a bit better than the 38mm, though some of that could be better yields on the 38mm displays.

completely disagree on 38 v 42.
42 was a lot smaller than i thought, 38mm is tiny. Apple employee i was with said the same, not a lot of people looking at the 38mm.
Would only recommend the 38mm for children or petite women.

Very much agree. The 42 is a "small 42" imo, my everyday watch is 41mm and feels bigger. Also, the SS with link band was much lighter than I expected. My everyday watch is titanium carbide coated titanium with a rubber band and it honestly felt about the same weight as the SS w/ link band. I was really hoping for more heft.

I also did not like the black SS as much as I had hoped I would (and I typically prefer black watches). I am going to cancel my black SS and order a regular SS w/ link band.

pics below for comparison of size.
