Normally, for the first day or so after an upgrade, the phone is doing a lot of internal indexing and such. That causes the processor to be running more than normal, leading to the phone feeling hot.

Put it in the fridge :)

I had the same issue. I did a factory reset and restored. That fixed the issue. Maybe I was lucky

do you have the GO FASTER selection turned on ?

and test over a few days- mine always get a little bit warmer when doing an update on the charger.
plus it is on a table so one side is not getting air cooled.

nope ,
my iphone X got super laggy(it was smooth when i got it but Suddenly for some reason it became really Laggy ) and it's funny, these lags started the same day that 11.3 was released so i updated and everything is super smooth no lags not a single one
and even my 6S plus(maybe older than 2.5 yearsold) is running Totally smooth, maybe as well as my x

Updating the OS will always heat up the phone. Apple has info about this. It's normal. The CPUs are working hard.
My recommendation whenever updating the OS is to take the phone out of the case, plug it in, and update before you go to bed so the phone can do its thing overnight. On hot days, aim a small fan at it. I had to do that last summer. Phone would get way too hot.
