I've been working on fixing up a late 2006 black macbook. It came without a battery and I (stupidly) bought a cheap one on Amazon. The battery I got did get mostly positive reviews so I thought I should be okay.

When I put it in the computer the computer recognizes it but says "not charging" and the magsafe LED stays green. Battery Health says it has a 79% charge and 98% battery health, but not charging. If I unplug the laptop it dies immediately.

So far I tried an SMC reset a couple of times with no result. Any troubleshooting suggestions?

It just feels wrong to buy a $129 battery for a $96 laptop

Not as wrong as buying 2-3 cheap ones that don't work.
