for anyone that might be interested - here's a picture of the AG Hires screen scaled to 1440*900 with SwitchresX. it's not quite as sharp as 1650*1080 - but still pretty good, if the small fonts on the original resolution start to hurt your eyes...

Interesting... so it let's you do 900 instead of 853 (or whatever it is)?

And the resulting quality is good?

Wow, I'm becoming happier and happier with my decision not to go with the HR screen. I've seen so many threads talking about the problem with the smaller text hurting people's eyes.

If I paid extra for the HR screen and had to use some 3rd party program to bring the resolution down I would be super pissed. Especially since the standard resolution doesn't even look that sharp, judging by the above screen shot.

yes, it lets you define a 1440*900, and it'll appear in the display choices. very easy. 1440*900 is as at least sharp as the screen on my previous powerbook (G4 12") - but not quite as sharp as the 1680*1050 original resolution (which is really clear.. it's a great screen.. the screenshot is taken at 1440*900 only..). 1680*1050 is pretty readable on defaults, but for those with weaker eyesight it's easy to change font size in most programs... there are a couple of system fonts that are trickier to change, in this case the 1440*900 switchresX solution is very convenient..

My vision's not great and I haven't had any problems with the high res. No idea how anyone could have a problem with it. People rationalise whichever choice they made.

Completely agree. I ended up going with the standard res and a 24" 1080p external since I use it at my desk most of the time anyway. I was really considering the HR/AG screen for the extra ~$250 but just couldn't justify it. And all these threads are really making me feel better about it. :)
