No, it doesn't. As already said, I don't own a large screen smartphone but I want one, which means I count among the 50% high-end consumers with a small smartphone but I don't count among the "don't want larger screen smartphones" consumers.

Thanks for snipping off and ignoring everything else I wrote. It's been nice not talking with you.

The article is trying to say just because X ships the most units, Apple should go and make an X to directly grab some of that marketshare.

X being whatever high volume shipping item the articles are talking about. in this case X is phablets.

This is bad business.
The correct way to do it is to look at X and see why companies are shipping so much of product X. And then make a new better than X product that address all the features X has and people want but in a much improved package. Apple did this. Netbooks were a high volume shipping item. Apple didn't rush out to make an Apple netbook because of this. They just worked out why people wanted netbooks and released a netbook beater (ie the iPad) to beat the netbook and take the netbook marketshare. And it worked.

The same deal needs to happen with the phablet market. Apple need to create a phablet beater and it'll sell. See what people like in phablets and address this in a better than a phablet product.

Do not agree.

Product X has been discovered by other manufacturers to be in demand, Apple is now merely joining that category. It wasnt in the category as Steve Jobs said people wont buy large phones, he was wrong. Apple is now joining that category. The quick entry was the iPhone 5 at 4" just by makimng it taller, that was at least something achievable in short order, the 4.7 and the 5.5 are the proper larger screens soon arriving

Netbooks are not the same category as iPads. Netbooks are full computers with full OS, an iPad is a tablet with a tablet OS designed for consumption more than creation. Netbooks failed as lower spec laptops ar not a lot more $

Apple wont create a phablet beater, they will create an iPhone phablet. It will retain the same plusses of an iPhone, and the same negatives of the nice, but locked down iOS. The form factor of the 4.7 or the 5.5 phablet will be poor compared to other brands, so there will not be a phablet beater, just a phablet catcher upper, and thats fine.

Do not agree with you in return.

Steve was talking at the time about set sized phones. Times have changed and Apple have moved on.

"the 4.7 and the 5.5 are the proper larger screens soon arriving"
In your opinion. There are rumours to say Apple will and will not release pahablets soon. So we'll find out soon enough which set of rumours are correct.

"Netbooks are not the same category as iPads."
This is 100% correct. And that I think was the idea. Netbooks are good for nothing so they went into a different category to create their netbook beater. And the iPad can do so much more than just content consumption. The iPad was designed as a blank slate and the users and 3rd party devs are paving the way for what the iPad can be used for.

I hope Apple makes something that is better than a phablet. But only time will tell.

We agree to disagree.

Set sized phones? Don't follow what you mean. He said that mid 2010. Engadget article noted "We're assuming he's likely talking about the latest crop of 4-, 4.3- and 5-inch phones that include the Galaxy S series, the EVO 4G, Droid X, and Dell Streak, even going so far as to call them "Hummers""

Apple haven't moved on as far as screen size is concerned, but rumours (I call them leaks these days) show a 4.7 and 5.5, so later this year Apple will catch up.

The iPad can off course consume and create, but you would baulk at spending any great period of time creating Word documents, spreadsheets, editing videos, etc, etc. You need a full OS, file system, mouse, keyboard. Can be done, but too hard. Surfing, email, video, reading, great.

Phablet. Again, a leak/rumour, but seems highly likely. They may even reduce the iPad Mini, and add phone hardware. I am unsure how they or anyone can make a better phablet. A LARGE phone or a small tablet is the same thing, the only requirement for a tablet/phablet is size. The only other phablet feature that I have seen is a stylus.

The concerns I have with the rumoured 4.7 and 5.5 is form factor. I fear they will be worst in class, that bothers me. (Larger form factor than other 4.7 and 5.5 screen sized devices)

My suggestions for the best phablet is reduce upper/lower bezel, make the home button thin and rectangular with touch feature, ignore thinner and lighter and put those gains towards battery. If the 4.7 and 5.5 were close to other form factors and not thin and not light buy big on battery, that is a big win.

Unless they have figured out the foldable screen thingy, this ain't happening. A 5+ inch screen is going to be a certain size no matter what.

My biggest fear is you might actually be correct and Apple will make the terrible mistake of release a phablet phone. I'll let you know I have a dilemma.

I want an iPhone 6. (as in phone and not phablet). To replace my iPhone 1. But if Apple only release a phablet for an iPhone 6, I'll be stuck. Don't want a phablet, but I want an iPhone. And also I don't want to spend all that money for old tech (ie iPhone 5S).

So if the iPhone 6 is a phone and not a phablet they have a sale from me. If it is a phablet I'll probably keep my iPhone 1 longer.

if you using that old tech you will be amased by iphone 5S and it will last you another 10 years man

You appear to be saying a 4.7 is a phablet? They will release a 4.7 iPhone 6. Supposedly a 5.5 phablet early 2015 (due to production issues with the sapphire screen). I feel they need to release a 4" as well, that will probably be the 5S but I hope they do a 5S updated with the 6 series CPU/GPU/camera. Satisfies the small screen lovers and the large screen lovers.

However, TBH the iPhone is losing lustre for me. I much more favour my iPad Air 128GB, and rMBP (recent switcher) with iOS improving and OSX. A 4.7 iPhone 6 will be fine, no more than that for me now. Bigger screen be useful better camera be useful, I will not upgrade to a 7

I think he means 4, 1 and 4 are next to each other on a numeric keypad

No, an Apple phablet will be much larger than the same screen size other manufacturer, due to Apples design requirements.

I have Jailbroken it with the whited00r firmware. With that I can access quite a few old apps with a time machine app store plus Cydia. That has me covered. Bt I mostly use it only as a phone. If I get an iPhone 6 I'll use it a lot more.

I do have a 4th Gen iPad though. And that keeps me going with iOS7.

About Time

I read a lot here don't post a lot but since I saw this let me say its about time give people choices not tie them down to what you want them to have im waiting for the 5.5 version using a Lumia 1520 6 inch phone wish the IPhone 6 was that size but ill settle for 5.5

I'd switch back for a larger screen

Originally an iPhone user, I switched to Android back when ATT was the only iPhone provider. I couldn't stand the slow ATT service.

After two years with Android, there were a number of compelling reasons to switch back to IOS. Android was just so freaking flaky. But the one thing that had hooked me was the screen. Retina screens may have been a nice feature, but absolute real estate was unbeatable for me. So I risked it and upgraded to another Android phone (this time with a 4.7 inch screen).

And this time around, things are much better. Android has matured a lot. It still isn't as smooth and polished as my old iPhone, but it does offer me some features that are very compelling.

But the biggest for me is the screen size. Every time my friend handed me his iPhone for some reason or another I would secretly be glad that I hadn't switched back. Looking at what appeared to me to be a glowing postage stamp made me realize that - for me - the bigger screen wins out over almost anything.

Now there are rumors of Apple going with a larger screen. A truly larger screen and not just a tiny bump up like they did with the 5 and 5s. And that has me interested. This might be the time to switch back. I would miss the better android keyboards and the useful widgets, but I would gain stability and polish. I'm truly interested (but not guaranteed) in going back.

But there is the issue. I am an Apple user through and through. But for various reasons I use Android. Now, if Apple doesn't release a larger screen this time around, no doubt the next version of Android will be so good that I will no longer have any interest in switching away. I am very nearly there now actually. This is their window of opportunity to get me back, but it requires what is - again, for me - a competitive screen size. If they fail to offer this, the window will surely close for good.

I cannot imagine I am alone (and the various comments on this forum prove that).

A couple of notes:

- This is what is known as an "opinion". I have mine. You have yours. They do not have to agree.

- People who want smaller screened phones have every right to want them as well. They may have valid reasons (or even invalid ones - who gives a $h1t if someone thinks I "look like an idiot" talking on a bigger phone - , but they are still reasons enough). I just don't want one, and I will never ever spend my money on one again.
