This is something new to me. I always do check the screen when I need to hang up so that I would realy know if I ended up the conversation or else I will be in trouble for my side comments or if I don't want the other side hearing the background after the conversation.

i've hung up on people that way by accident. I've never tried hanging up that way on purpose; it just doesn't seem natural. I'm glad it changed.

For me, either instinctually or habitually, I associate the power button with
  1. Turning the phone on/off
  2. Turning the screen on/off
I've never thought to associate it with ending calls. That would be bothersome to me.

It can be quite convenient to use it to end a call quickly as you move the phone away from your ear, and then basically lock the screen with another quick press of the same button. Ultimately just depends on what you get used to essentially.

Also, there are some other uses for the lock button too when it comes to calls, like stopping a call from ringing by pressing it once (similar to pressing the volume buttons), or actually rejecting/declining an incoming call, by pressing the button twice. (That's in addition to using the lock button for things like screenshots or potentially force quitting a stuck app.)

I was having problems with the proximity sensor and tried this to turn off screen. Hung up instead.
