While I currently run a shanzhai "Apple" 27" IPS 2560x1600 over DP (and am quite happy with it), I do find the need for more pixels. My Air only has 1 mini-dp/thunderuseless port, so I'm stuck with one external display. I've been keeping an eye on 4k tv set pricing, and the 40" screens are in the same pricing realm as the 27" was when I bought it a few years ago, but offer about 30% more pixels. I can get a 39" 4K set for about 3900rmb retail or about 3500rmb online (slightly less than 600$ USD); that will give me 3840×2160, albeit over HDMI. I realise that HDMI is limited to 24fps at 4K resolutions, but the question is, can the Air drive it? Setup would be minidp -> hdmi -> set. Set supports HDMI 1.4b (so 4k @24fps). Air is the MacBookAir5,2. Anyone tried it yet? If not, I guess I'll need to go buy a DP->HDMI with 4k Support and see at the store.
