It makes more sense to buy a Roku than to watch Netflix on my Xbox, right? Xbox wasn't made to be a video player, it was made to be a game console. Using it for movies is clearly a waste!

It makes more sense to buy a dedicated calculator than to use my expensive iPhone as a calculator, right? The functionality is there, but it's clearly a waste!

Guess what - if I need to do a simple calculation, I'm going to use my iPhone. If I want to pick up a movie real quick, I'm going to use my Xbox. If I need a clear secondary monitor for a little while, I might use my iPad. Why should I go out and buy something else? There's absolutely nothing wrong with any of these, and the functionality is there. They may not be the most ideal, but they work and have their uses.

Yeah it may not be what you personally want to to use, but who are you to say I'm "wasting" my equipment by using it?

Why is there people still replying to my old posts and repeating basically the same discussion? Please read the last posts first.

You guys aren't very creative. EVEN IF IT'S LAGGY IT IS EXTREMELY USEFUL.

1) I have Dual 27" Displays connected to my 17" MacBook pro and design all day. I use the airdisplay non-stop. Not to mention Airdisplay is more than simple VNC (it draws the windows programmatically), and it treats the display JUST LIKE hooking up a 4th or 5th monitor to your mac would be… shows up in the display preferences and everything!

2) For people who don't get it.
A) AirDisplay draws the cursor, so the cursor NEVER LAGS
B) I'm not playing videos on it, nor am I dragging windows. I'm using it for keeping application pallets with rows of buttons.

Even if it takes .05 seconds to refresh I don't really care, because I DO NOT need to see a button UPDATE to know I clicked it. NOR do I need it to update to see a list of my layers, even previewing code I'm writing in safari webkit view is just great.

I use my other two monitors for having photoshop open and having two views of the same document, one zoomed in and one at actual size.

C) Not to mention the fact that you can put TWO RETINA iPhones vertically to see your apps side by side much closer to how they look. Or you can design an iPad app and know how it looks, especially all those 1PX gloss highlights that you spend MONTHS redesigning to look right on high density displays.

Seriously it's fine, no you won't watch video on it. BUT can you FIND ME A STUDIO REFERENCE quality display, that cost this PRICE, can BE QUICKLY GRABBED OFF Your DESK AND SHOWN TO EVERYONE IN THE OFFICE? Can you do that with your 27"? I CAN"T even do this with my 17" notebook because it's docked into my displays.

Geeze the nerve of the people here telling me, and everyone else we're just a bunch of idiots.

No doubt some of you are posting how idiotic we are while running one of the apps I developed on your mac or iPad. I used this setup to create the app that I sold you for $7, so really who's the idiot now…

Stop telling people how stupid their setup is, just because it's stupid for you doesn't make you the majority. It makes you a person with little to know imagination. This is one of the best selling apps, because GASP people actually know how to use it.

Did you care to read your own comments?
$800 or $499 to $100 still is a huge difference in price vs functionality.
Google for portable laptop monitors... Starting at $69 and really work.
Or, check these from Toshiba: http://us.toshiba.com/computers/accessories/mobile-monitor/

If you want it to impress your girlfriend or just to save the day, I understand.

But if it's laggy as many users claim, then it's definitely a useless gimmick.
When I hear it has improved, i'll look into it to review it.

Well, that's a good use for it. Does it take a while to load? Probably, but in this case you may not really care to wait a few seconds for it to load.

You could also use PhotoStream to send your photo to the iPad, but yes, it would be more work.

I get to watch my screen unintentionally flicker into and out of sleep in HiDPI! They need to pull this crap off the App store until it is no longer crippled

Works on my Mid-2009 MBP 15"

I decided to go ahead and try it. I downloaded, installed, and restarted as directed. When the MBP (mid-2009, 15") came back up, I put it to sleep and woke it (as suggested by the manufacturer) as the workaround for my model. I opened up WiFi's menu and created a network.

Opened up the new iPad (3rd gen) and launced the app. Went back to the MBP and "enabled" Air Display. The iPad showed right up. Selected the iPad as the Air Display and the MBP went through it's normal "new screen discovery" where the display flashes for a second or two... then...

Worked like a champ. As expected the background looks small, so at first you might be disappointed when you incorrectly assume that's the total screen size. I launched an MPG video file on the MBP, and then dragged it over to the iPad. Slid all over the iPad screen (not just where the background image is). In native screen size I had no real lag, when I full screened it on the iPad, then it skips frames a bit. Resized back, and looked good again. Dragged screen back to the MBP.

I'm in Afghanistan, so for me, it's going to be very usable. I'll install it on my mini as well, and probably use it more often there. A co-worker here said he can use it to do his on-line homework. He comes in to work for the sole reason his work computer has a dual monitor. Now, he can have two docs up at the same time back in his room.

Worth it for the usability and flexibility. You know, people said the same crap about the iPhone before it's release. "Why would I need an Apple phone? My crackberry does everything I need." Where are they now?

I'm not saying this will kill the market for monitors, but it's a usable application. My wife hates a second monitor at home for aesthetic reasons, so I can use this as an ad hoc 2nd display on the iMac back at home (when I return). Happy wife == happy home :D

At least some Apple employees are pretty stoked about the retina capabilities of Air Display too. I was in the Apple store today for some accessories and mentioned the app. The sales guy tapped a few buttons and began showing off the app and said "you mean this one?" with a smile.

At just $10, there are certainly worse things I have wasted money on, but wow, does this app suck (for me at least).

The refresh rate is surprisingly slow, and documents lag immensely when I try to move them over to the ipad or do elementary stuff like scrolling, even with a good wireless connection. Guess it just takes too much juice to render those graphics for the retina display. I had to turn off hidpi and retina resolution just to get a decent frame rate.

I guess it fares well in viewing documents, but then again, I could just as easily sync them via dropbox, and open the file in my ipad for ready viewing. Icloud does a fairly good job of keeping my preferences sync'ed across all my apple devices, so if I have one document on my main computer, chances are, they will also be on my ipad/iphone.

I suppose if you already have a MBA, and would appreciate a 2nd display, it can be worth trying out, but if your places have crap internet connection, don't bother. :(

$10 App

Many here have referred to Air Display as a $10 app.

While looking at this app, it appears that there is a $20 charge for the OS X app, a $10 charge for the iOS app and a $5 charge for the Android app.

That looks like between $25 and $35 to configure an iOS and/or Android device as a second monitor or controller for the the OS X desktop.

Is the OS X app NOT necessary in order to achieve OS X desktop to mobile device integration?

I have a Mac mini set up as a Home Theater computer and I have a wireless speaker system so I can listen to my music anywhere in the house. I'm looking at Air Display as a way to view the iTunes/Front Row display without having to run to the living room every time I want to know who's playing that song or what album is it from.

Where are you seeing the price for OS X app, the connect app is free to use here: http://avatron.com/apps/air-display

It's just $10 for iOS. If you want it for your android device, it's another 5$.

This thread is talking about using the HiDPI mode, thus only the Mac/iOS apps are being discussed here since Android and Windows don't have HiDPI modes.
