Not overly thrilled with this, Mac Pro supports it, MacBook Pro doesn't. Bought the MBP in June 2008, they updated it a few months later :/
 
This is stupid as ****. My mac mini is on my network hard wired to airport extreme. why the hell does it matter what wifi chipset I have!

As numerous people here have explained, AirDrop does not use your network. It uses ad-hoc wireless connections between two compatible wireless cards. If you don't have a compatible wireless card, then you can use traditional AFP for file transfers.
