iPad Air Gen 1 half screen worth fixing?

i have my sons iPad Air that half the video screen is dead. The touch still works.
Is there any sense in sending in for repair or move on?

Probably "Move on". Apple charges $249 to repair that screen. A third party screen repair may cost less, but Apple's latest low cost iPads would be a better use of that $249, because you would end up with an entirely new device.

iOS 12 does bring back some performance on the original Air, but yeah probably time to move on. The 2018 iPad goes on sale for just a tad more than what it would cost to replace the screen/swap out the Air and is dramatically better. The 2017 iPad were being cleared out for around the same price as a screen repair/swap out or even less and you still might be able to track one down (walmart seems to go in/out of stock for $249).

What "might" be worth fixing it is if your Air is a cellular model with like the free 200mb T-Mobile plan that can't be transferred. That is one reason why I've kept my original Air around as a "backup" device.

The 2017 iPad were being cleared out for around the same price as a screen repair/swap out or even less and you still might be able to track one down (walmart seems to go in/out of stock for $249).

Another avenue is Apple certified refurbs for $239/32GB. Granted, they sell out rather quickly, too.

Sure, we are in Costa Rica and getting things here and out are near impossible.
