Okay guys a bit of help here. I'm a newbie to that world of Apple and I think I've an issue that I'm looking to resolve but not sure.

The problem is using Air Play with a 4K Apple TV.

I'm looking to play videos from my iPhone X (256Gb) or iPad Pro (256Gb), 12.9". Both are running iOS 11.4. The Apple TV is running the current TV OS too.

Video sources I've looked to use are:
  • VLC playing 1080P files in MKV format
  • Native Apple M4V playback of 1080p files copied onto the iPhone / iPad using iTunes.
I was expecting to be able to play the video on the Apple TV with just hitting the AirPlay symbol in the VLC App or Apple TV app on the iPhone / iPad. Nothing however happens at all unless I first choose to share the screen with the Apple TV. Playback then occurs.

Once playback has started phone / pad show show a playing on TV message, and all seems well, but I then have two further issues; the playback is often jerky and even worse if I choose to pause the playback if I leave it paused more than around a minute then the TV 'loses' the connection and goes back to the 'next up and apps' screen. So restart the video I have to re-screen mirror and restart the video.

Surely it should not be that messy and problematical?

So I need to check what I'm missing. The Apple TV has been set to allow AirPlay from all devices (not just those using the same Apple ID) to allow (hopefully) all family members to use it. Is there anything else I need to set? Or were my expectations over hopeful?

Help!

when you click the airplay logo in VLC, it just sends the audio
you have to enable screen mirroring to make the video go

go to the iTunes store on your phone/pad, find a movie with a trailer, play the trailer, and hit airplay, once you select your TV audio and video will go there.

also just noticed, if the destination has a circle next to it, that's airplay 2, and will only be audio.

try rebooting your router

try googling "airplay <Your Router Model>"
see if anyone has any suggestions.

airplay is finicky, and requires a very stable network,
if one or both of your devices has a poor wifi connection, you'll have issues

you could try hard wiring the aTV to ethernet, that might help

It was sorted out via a router reboot and resetting the network settings on the iPhone. Hoping the iPad will be as easy to fix :)
