I returned 5 so far. It's really sad I had to do this, as it is a lost of time as you said. But it's the only way Apple will realize that there is a Quality issue and maybe the will fix it with a future release (even if they don't admit the issue officially, what they almost never do).

I hope you don't have to go through as many as me to get a good one, it was starting to really get me down.

I hope so too. :) Did you buy all of them at the Apple Store? How did you do it that they let you return so many iPads?

I used one Apple ID to purchase 11 and return 10 of them
I used another Apple ID to purchase and return 3 of them
I purchased 2 from the Apple Store - Regent Street, London
and I purchased 1 from the Apple Store - Covent Garden, London

Apple online didn't even ask why I was buying and returning so many. I am however on first name terms with the TNT guy who kept collecting the returns. He said to keep buying as it keeps him in a job! A positive from all this I guess.

If anyone is interested the best uniform screens I've come across are the DMPM (Week 3) ones, I had 5 of these. All had better uniformity, but all had light bleeding. The one I chose to keep was a DMPQ (week 3).

Not looking at them in the shop. I've purchased and returned 17 of them, not something I wanted to do as it's a waste of time for everyone involved.

I use the iPad for photography as a portable portfolio, so colour accuracy is a must. The 17th was acceptable, but has quite a bit of light bleeding. A sacrifice I'm willing to take.

17 returns are just insane ....

Ipad air

Thinking of getting one but that doesn't sound good so maybe I'll wait. Is the line there all the time?

Thought I'd share my experiences with the iPad Air screen issue:

Bought one just before Christmas and immediately noticed the 'bookspine' effect. Thought I would try and live with it and managed to do so for about one month before I decided to take it into my closest Apple store, as it was not acceptable that a shoddy screen should be part of a device that costs so much.

Had to book a "genius" appointment and come back a few days later. So I did that.

"Genius" fellow was struggling to see what I could see, but agreed to let me exchange it, but only once (probably because he didn't think there was anything wrong with the screen). I agreed to that, even though I didn't agree with the 'once only' exchange offer. Anyway, they ordered a new unit and told me to come back when it was ready for pick up.

About a week later I got the call to pick up my replacement.

Went in to the Apple store, showed another Apple chap my defective iPad screen issue (which this guy immediately saw and agreed with exchanging it, which was nice). He brought out the replacement unit, unboxed it, turned it on, and what do you know? It had a very distinct shadowing down the lefthand side! The light uniformity was better than my original unit, but still not good enough. Told the Apple chap I wasn't happy with the replacement screen, and since we could both compare and clearly see the difference between that screen and a demo unit with a decent screen, I was able to get a another replacement for the replacement. I then had to arrange another genius bar appointment to get them to look at my defective iPad again just so they could order another replacement. Apple chap said he would add notes about my issues so the next appointment would be a formality. Sighed and booked the appointment.

Took my iPad in on the arranged day. Had to 'prove' to them the screen was defective, as the notes added about my prior experiences were not recorded (or acknowledged). They offered to replace it (again). Fine.

Another week later they had my replacement-replacement. I held my breath and looked at the screen and it was not perfect, but leagues better than my original iPad Air. Basically said 'Yep, this one's good enough', and have a satisfactory unit now.

The only imperfection I would say about the iPad Air screen I have now is slight display uniformity issues when I tilt the screen (not just viewing angle anomalies, but I can live with it because I don't generally tilt the screen to read/ watch stuff), and I don't think the black levels are deep enough (maybe I'm used to OLED screens though).

Hello,

Today for last month I exchange 5 iPad Air 32gb silver cellular... All have dead pixels ( or its dust under screen, dont know). Its impossible to get one perfect device!!! So for long time I am thinking about dont buy any iPad Air and try to wait to summer or next gen.

Already have iPad mini retina 32gb grey cellular, I exchange him one time and its great... Minimum ghosting, no dead pixels, and I love him.

I have yet to see a iPad air with no dust in it. I have 2 at home and both units have dust in it. One has multiple specks and the one I am using has 1 speck of dust but they do not have any yellow tint.

I got my iPad Air 64GB WiFi replaced 5-6 times because of the same issue - dust under the screen. The first 4 replacements were non-retail units and the last 2 replacements were boxed retail units. I'm not sure if this issue is limited only to iPads sold in India or otherwise, but after paying 50k INR for a device I was expecting a non-defective one. I guess I'll just have to live with this iPad and its dust particles, as it seems all iPad Air tablets (at least the ones sold in India) are plagued by the same issue.

I've yet to see one with dust ....

People do realise that all products shipped by any large company has a defect ratio of about 1.4% meaning for every 1 million iPads atleast 14000 iPads are going to be defective.

I've gone from iPad 1 to iPad 3 to iPad 4 to iPad Air, never had a single defective device.

A defect ratio of 1.4% is quite good .... I was thinking about 2-3%.

They've sold how many Air ? 10 millions ? 20 ?
There are 20-300000 defective units in the wild, and 30-40 people complaining here.... There is still space

Please do not start this again :(

Not trying to. I think there's always going to be some issues with an initial release. But it's just not something that needs to be "fixed" now, since the overall fail rate on iPad screens is surely small in comparison to the whole user base.

I just bought an iPad Air with none of those issues, so exactly what are they supposed to be fixing?

All the above - bookspine shadow, yellow tint and overall screen unevenness. The ones I see on display in the store have all of these characteristics. I hope the iPad Air 2 fixes all of these problems, not "issues".

Yup. My iPad has the bookspine issue.

Which software versions were Preinstalled?

The point is that, contrary to some, the iPad Air’s screen is still very flawed with general unevenness, bookspine shadow and yellow cast. I hope these problems are solved with the release of the iPad Air 2.
