The majority of the trips I take are on Airbus planes. I did get the chance to fly in the new A380 from Johannesburg to Frankfurt a few weeks ago. NICE plane.

I tend to think that Airbus has a design philosophy which looks at the people in the cockpit as system managers, while Boeing treats the people in the cockpit as pilots.

Airbus decided that if a plane was gear down and below a certain speed and altitude, it was going to land - so it prevented the pilots from pulling up and away.

Ask yourself - have the engineers really thought of everything in advance?

For every instance of an Airbus crashing as a result of system failure or poor design, I could find an instance of a Boeing crashing as a result of the same.

Thousands of Airbuses take off and land safely every day, as do thousands of Boeings. If Airbuses were really as dangerous as some people make them out to be, they would be falling out of the sky.

Forget about aircraft type. Book whatever flight has the best service, schedule and price to fit your needs. You'll arrive at your destination safely whether it's an Airbus or Boeing. Air travel has never been safer than it is now, and you have a much better chance of being killed in a car accident on your way to the airport.
 
787 isn't out yet?

Have been on 727, 737, 747, 767, 777, A320, A340, A380... and the A380 blows everything else out of the water in terms of comfort, quietness and smoothness. Way more legroom, too.

When the 787 is available for the flights I do maybe things will change, but right now they're not even playing the same sport, let alone in the ballpark.

As far as the A320 and A340 go... "meh". The A340 is decent, but it's just "a plane" to me. The A380 though is a step up.

I stand corrected.

I guess it's going to be some time before I get on one though, most of the long haul flights I do are between Australia and Europe / Africa - the plane of choice seems to be either 777 or A380, and between those two, it's no contest.... A380 all the way.

This is a myth, because the A320 was the first widespread aircraft using computerised fly-by-wire technology, and people didn't know whether they wanted to trust a computer controlling their plane. The truth nowadays is, most commercial airliners are just as computerised as the others.

The A320s do have the barking dogs (if you've ever flown on one, you know what I'm talking about. It's a noise from the hydraulic system that sounds like sawing or barking dogs) which can get annoying if you're on the ground for awhile. But once airborne it doesn't make a difference.

I don't know why, maybe because I'm a plane nut, but I love the little nuances unique to each aircraft. Like the "banshee howl" caused by the flaps on the BAe 146/Avro RJ :eek: I fly on these birds every day, so I love this noise.
 
Isolated incident. Like I said, I could find an example of a Boeing falling out of the sky. But they're both safe, and Airbus's fly-by-wire system doesn't worry me one bit.

Me neither. I just don't like Airbus's limits vs Boeings. And how the auto throttles are setup.
 
I probably end up on an Airbus more frequently than a Boeing but once you are sat down it's all much of a muchness. I would say the only difference is being in the upper deck on a 747 (never been on a 380 so don't know if it's the same) which I found to be noisier than downstairs due to having more surface area exposed to wind.

My Airbus and Boeing flights pale in comparison when I flew on a Tu-154 from Minsk to Frankfurt.

Also, I found the A380 extremely nice, even in economy.
 
I prefer Airbus, but neither compare to the comfort and leg room of a C-17:

Flew from Kuwait City to Fort Huachuca, AZ in one. Once in flight, we spread out and slept on the floor.
 
I should also say that I much prefer high-speed rail over planes around Europe.

If the cost is less than 50% more, I'll always go with the high-speed rail due to city center-proximity and the ability to move around (plus happy hour every evening is quite nice.)

Would be nice if they were running at 350km/h instead of the conservative 300-320km/h

As for choice of comfort it all depends on how the airline sets it up. I fly mainly delta or American, so I fly on a lot of md80s which is not in this debate :)

Also for jumpseating airbus wins!
