airdrop from iPad to mini

hello baseball fans
the iPad gen 5, updated, air drop does not want to trigger, while in "Photo" everything (i think) is set. the iPad and mini (2012 el cap) are neck to neck very close, this sending photo process worked recently, i can send from the mini. the blue icon on the iPad does nothing, turned off sharing on, shut does iPad, wifi works great.
any help would be um helpful
