iPad Air Airdrop Problems

I've had an m4 mini for some but not real familiar with it, just use for music.

I have a new ipad air and want to send files in both directions.

I'm attaching it to emails right now.

I tried using air drop but it says no contacts, or everybody doesn't show anyone.

Do I need to make it a new contact or something?
