I'm wondering if iOS7 and Mavericks can share files/pictures/etc. over airdrop since both seem to share the same protocols. Has anyone tried this or know if it works?

It doesn't currently work. They don't see each other.

They have the same name, but unfortunately are not the same protocol, so it's not possible at this time.

    Good to know

I hope at one point they allow the 2 device types to talk to each other over Airdrop. Seems like a no brainer to me.

I just assumed it would work. I mean, they're both called AirDrop! A strange omission, to be sure. Well, maybe it'll work by the final releases.

Yes, this should really be fixed for sale of consistency and actual functionality. Are there any technical hurdles to prevent ios and osx work with each other's AirDrop?

iOS to Mac isn't supported now. Maybe in iOS 8/Maverick's successor it will appear.

Maybe it'll be available when the two are released.

    ----------

Or through an update to iOS 7/Mavericks

Possible, but I wouldn't bet on it.

That's going to cause a lot of confusion.

If Apple never planned on having it work they should have called it something else on iOS.

Will it? They'd have to completely write OS X AirDrop before 10.9 is released.

Seeing as they don't mention sharing with OSX anywhere that I'm aware of I'd consider it somewhat unlikely that the two airdrop systems will be compatible on release.

I agree, something like this would be a huge selling point for Apple. It would be like Apple's answer to NFC. The fact that they did not mention this at all makes me doubt that this will appear in GM release. However, this could always be an added feature...(iOS 7.1/iOS 8)

I wonder if will have to wait for OS 10.10 (11) to get this feature.
