Is there a benefit I'm not aware of where my TV can now do airplay. It's already hooked up to my Apple TV, but wondering if I'm missing something. So far, I discovered I can turn off my TV with Siri, but not sure of what else.

That is nice. The Apple TV is suppose to be able to do that too but AirPlaying to it from an iPhone, it's even featured in the product page of the iPhone 12. I hope an update can fix it.
It should. If my Roku Ultra (which is not DV capable) can convert the DV HDR file on my iPhone 12 Pro to HDR and display it on my LG E6 OLED tv, it should be easily fixed on the ATV4K.

My understanding is that it does work on an AppleTV if you have it set to always output DolbyVision which is not ideal.

I heard that too but I really don’t trust it. If the Apple TV is set to Dolby Vision always it outputs EVERYTHING as DV and that is just a bad idea.

Put another way I don’t really trust that the video is really Dolby vision when output that way. It doesn’t look particular good in my tests. Odd as it sounds i think with this method the output from the iPhone to the TV isn’t really true Dolby Vision.

I don't think that the Roku is doing the conversion. It's likely the phone doing the heavy lifting.

I just updated my TCL and airplay worked for a second, but now it won't work anymore! I see my TV in as an option for airplay, but I cannot select it under Airplay Display! I am getting an error "Cannot connect to 65 in Roku TV"

My TV is on the same wifi network, that's why it worked for a second. Can anyone please please help me?

It actually isn't real DV. It's not taking the raw DV file from the phone and displaying it as DV. It first converts it back to SDR, and then displays it as DV. So you are not getting the full bt2020 color gamut, but instead a rec709 color gamut converted to bt2020. So it will not look correct.

Check in the roku settings with airplay that it only requires a one time code.

My 2018 55” 7118X TCL 55S515 works with airplay and HomeKit now! Had to add the HomeKit from the app. Software version 9.4.0 added this

With the update the Apple TV controller in control center gains the ability to control the TCL Roku tv from the Apple TV remote just select the TCL TV vs the Apple TV at the top of the remote. its not a complete Roku remote but it has a d Pad and pause play control for the tcl Roku tv

Hi!

Can you tell me how the footage looked on your TV? Did it look the same as your iphone screen?

Thank you!
Confirmed on my TCL 8-series TV. It was able to playback footage recorded on my iPhone 12 Pro in Dolby Vision which is a nice touch.

I recorded a video clip on my 11 Pro Max in 4k at 30fps and when I airplay on my 3 series TCL 4K Smart LED TV, 65" (65S425) it says HDR on the screen, and the colors look horrible, they don't look anything like my phone screen (photos or videos)!

Do you think that's because it's a low quality cheap screen? Or is it something else? Why do the airplayed video clips say HDR?

Thanks in advance!

Upgraded my TCL 65" tv tonight and video on AirPlay looks great! My only issue is the sound from my sound bar is not working. When I shut off, the TV sound works fine, but it's not passing the sound over HDMI to my sound bar. Doh.

I also suspect that for many, myself included, we're willing to pay a premium for an additional box that's independent of the TV and its OS/upgrade cycle and that has that familiar Apple "feel" to it. I've never been a fan of Roku's clunky interface and "channel" model where everything feels slow; having my TV in Homekit and with AirPlay 2 directly is nice, but I'm still going to buy the next AppleTV device for the interface, ease of use, and overall ecosystem, and I suspect there's a sufficient number of people like me to where its not an EITHER OR scenario.
I have an Apple TV HD (4) and used to think the same as you, Roku is slow and the UI sucks. However, after buying a 4K HDR TCL Roku TV the new Roku UI is actually damn fast (ie. instant) and the app UIs are almost exactly the same so it just about doesn’t matter. It even has live tiles for the inputs and you can move them whenever you want and rename them whatever you want. It’s easily the best TV UI I’ve used. I do still love my iCloud Photo Screensaver on the Apple TV though.

Hisense 55” 58R6+ here got the update but only HomeKit working. Nice to be able to control input but home play doesn’t show up on my phone as an option to share to.
Apple AirPlay settings are on but interesting enough Require Code option is grayed out and stuck at Use Password instead which I haven’t set up yet. Turning AirPlay Off and On does nothing.

Updated my hisense roku and screen mirroring stops working when I launch safari On my iPad.

am i the only one that doesn’t want airplay on my roku tv? i already have a apple tv.

my tv automatically updated and now i have two inputs and i want to delete the Roku one :( I already deleted it from the Home app and it’s still there lmao

you can make an argument for that for older TV's, but the new Samsung I just bought I rarely use the Apple TV anymore. it took an hour or so to set up all my apps for easy access and I just press one button and choose an app I want to stream. the remote doesn't even have numbers, doesn't have a source button to select HDMI ports and other sources, etc.

the rest of what the Apple TV does that the tv doesn't do isn't worth the price apple is charging for it
