I was thinking today - once AirPlay 2 is released, is the goal to be able to play to and connect with any devices that are compatible with the technology? AirPlay 2 is obviously coming to HomePod, and Sonos has announced that they plan on supporting it as well.

Does that mean that if you have both speakers throughout a home, you'll be able to play the same music (or different music) throughout the home using Airplay? It would be great for someone who already has Sonos speakers and who adds a HomePod to then be able to seamlessly connect all of them.

I only bought the Homepod because I read that airplay 2 will be added to Sonos speakers. I have a Play 5, Play 3 and an older version Play 1 already as well as a Sonos controller for my old non WIFI stereo system. That said I don't know what that will look like or when it will happen. I read from an interview with someone at Sonos that the speakers will work fine with Airplay2 but that Siri on your Homepod will not be able to control the Sonos speakers. I really like the Homepod from a sound perspective. I hope it's able to eventually "play well" with my Sonos speakers. I'm not a fan of the Sonos App and would just prefer to use my Apple Music App to play everything.

Now Come on Apple - Let's get Airplay 2 out!!! ;-)

Once AirPlay 2 rolls along and Sonos add support for it, you will be able to simultaneously play the same music on different speakers. Or as you say, different music in different speakers that’s going to be the biggest improvement as far as AirPlay is concerned.

Unfortunately it will have no impact on how HomePod interacts, or rather, doesn’t. With other devices. The HomePod will remain a sort of closed system, working only with other HomePods.

You should be able to use Siri on your phone to control your Sonos speakers, so it’s no great loss really.
