Bought a new MacBook Pro 16 to replace my old MacBook Air 13 (which was 7 years old) and I'm having issues getting AirPlay to connect to my Apple TV 4K.

In Display Settings, the option is ticked to show the Air Play icon in the menu if available (it doesn't show up), and on the drop down I have the Apple TV (called "Living Room" displayed). If I select Living Room then nothing happens. If I use Control Centre to select Screen Mirroring and choose Living Room, then there is a delay of about 15 seconds before an error pops up saying cannot connect to living room.

I used to do this fine with my MacBook Air with no issues.

I tried on my iPhone (11 Pro Max) and it worked just fine.

Tried to use the Home app as one website I stumbled across suggested and discovered I could stream music to the Apple TV just fine. But no the screen.

Interestingly, I was playing a movie on Apple TV when I tried once, and selected the Living Room from the drop down in Display Settings, and it instantly paused the movie but nothing displayed on the screen. I can replicate that time and time again. So it is clearly able to see it but not send the screen to it.

MacBook is running Big Sur 11.0.1
Apple TV is on 14.2
iPhone is on 14.1

I have tried all sorts and cannot get this to work. I did an online chat with Apple Tech and they couldn't help so have arranged someone to cal me later in the week.

But though I'd see if anyone else had seen the same problem and managed to fix it.

Thank you

I have been having a similar issue with AirPlay since updating my ATV4K to tvOS 14.2, or maybe to just tvOS 14.

Airplay Mirroring from iPhones nor Macs work.

AirPlay isn't the only issue I have been having, there seems to be a bunch of bugs.

tvOS 14 has been such a turd, I really with I could go back to tvOS 12 when everything worked right.

This has been an issue since tvOS14 was released:
In my case it seems to have something to do with making Homepods the default output for the ATV. Since you don't mention Homepods I guess the bug in not due to actually selecting Homepods as default output but more the new (Apple) software to allow this.

Glad I'm not the only one with this and of issue. Hopefully I'll either get some solution from Apple when they call me back later this week, or a future update will resolve it.

Rather disappointingly Apple Support were useless.

They called me back almost exactly at the agreed time. Spoke to two people and they asked me basic questions, and the second guy did screen share to look at settings - which I had already told him I checked. Then told me they can't escalate until I remove all virus protection and 3rd party security software and prove it is still an issue without it! I said my other Mac has identical software and works fine on Catalina. Nope, has to be removed.

I politely abandoned the call at that point - I just don't need the hassle. I'll live without it for now - seems a bug so will wait for them to fix it hopefully.

Yes. Works fine. And from my IOS devices. I can also stream music to the Apple TV from my Big Sur Mac using the Music app. It is just the screen mirroring that fails to work.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear, are you able to screen mirror from your Mac using Catalina?

I am just wondering, because sometimes I am unable to screen mirror from any of my Macs nor iPhones. But, sometimes it works.

If we are having the same issue, think it is tvOS related, as there has been a bunch of bugs wit tvOS 14.

Sorry, yes. Everything works fine from the Cataline Mac. Can mirror to the Apple TV first time everytime.

I have the same problem. AirPlay worked to both of my Apple TV's, but after the Big Sur upgrade I can no longer connect to either. My son, who does not live with me, has the same problem with his Mac and Apple TV, too.

This has to be a bug in Big Sur.

So, this morning I discover that I cannot send to or from my new MacBook using AirDrop either. Tried to send myself a photo from my IOS device and it sees it, but when I send it just sits "waiting" and nothing happens on the Mac. In reverse it just doesn't find devices to send to.

Is this happening for anyone else? Either I have an issue with my hardware to install or Big Sur is junk.
