Just curious--how fast is this connection relative to WiFi?

I think this feature must use a peer-to-peer wifi connection - I don't think Buetooth would have the bandwidth for streaming 1080p video for example. So the speed should actually be better, as there will not be any network congestion to deal with.

I guess as is the case with AirDrop, BT is only used to establish the connection without a router. Once done, direct WiFi is used for the actual transport.

Hmm wonder if Airplay direct will work with my Bose Wifi/Airplay radio.

Right now to listen to music when not on a wifi network I have to hotspot my phone and connect to it from the player and then I can only listen to pandora and internet radio.

I hope I can airplay my iTunes music without a wifi connection.

I've been playing around with peer-to-peer code for a little while now. How does the AirPlay direct work? I have an AppleTV and and iOS8 device. It still connects to the network to send something to AppleTV.

It is possible your ATV must have the new ATV beta update to work or maybe it is not enabled yet. My guess is otherwise that it works in similar way as AirDrop i.e. configure connection with BT and then transfer with WiFi. Would also guess BT 4.0 is required.
