I have an iPhone and a MacBook Pro 13, and I normally like to watch videos and music from the phone in the TV.

When I use Airplay 2, everything is seamless, except for a very huge issue that renders it completely useless: If the iPhone gets locked the stream also turns off. There’s not much issue with music as it is with videos.

But also, if you move away from the app you are casting, it also stops.

WHY?? Who designed it that way? It’s useless!!

When using Chromecast, I can keep using the phone, lock it, even play some games and the stream doesn’t get interrupted and never stops! That the way it should work!!

Also, chromecast stays active even after the video is finished, so if I click on another video it automatically cast it.

I thought this was an issue that only happened with my TV, but it happens with other TVs too! So I guess it’s an issue with Airplay, which I even suspect is by design (a very stupid one, I may say)

I really want to force chromecast in the iPhone but I don’t know how. I downloaded Chrome and it stills uses airplay and there is no way to get an option to chromecast.

In apps that I have it, it works beautifully. I love it! I wish Airplay worked like that, but my expectations are not high at all since Apple became a marketing company first, a services company second, hardware company third, and at the very bottom a software company.

That's not how mine works. I can AirPlay videos from my iPhone, iPad, or Mac while I work in other apps. Video also continues to stream if I lock the iPhone or iPad. Perhaps you've confused screen mirroring with AirPlay?

Mostly YouTube played inside Safari. But I have other streaming apps too. Which ones cause trouble for you? I'll help you try to figure this out. I'm using an iPhone 13 Pro running iOS 16.

It depends on how it was implemented. I can even close the Paramount+ App and it continues to cast to my Philips TV but depending on the PLAYER in Safari, I may have to keep the phone awake or not

I am not doing a screen mirroring. I use mostly Safari and videos I have on the iPhone. Facebook and VLC use chrome cast and work perfectly.

For example, one time a friend sent me a 5 min video of her trip and since my iPhone sleeps in 1 min, it got interrupted and closed the AirPlay.

Videos from safari too. If I go to Apole trailers and cast them either don’t work or get interrupted whenever the iPhone goes to sleep. I have to manually switch to “never” in settings in order to watch something via Airplay.

Mine plays fine in the scenarios you use. It might make a difference whether you're playing the video fullscreen or not. An iPhone won't sleep if video is playing fullscreen.
