Airplay/iTunes streaming device?

This is likely a dumb question...

Does there exist a product (or products) that are basically a hard drive that can stream to an Apple TV (or an Apple TV can pull from).

ie. So that I could just load stuff in and Apple TV will see it like an iTunes library?

apple tv needs a computer running iTunes to stream any media from. there are workarounds, using plex and a NAS, but its not as simple as just buying a hard drive and hitting play.

....yes...That's why I said "basically a hard drive that can stream to an Apple TV" and not "a hard drive I can plug in to the apple tv".

No. Anything packaged with the feature "iTunes Server" will do nothing more than show up in iTunes as a shared library.

Not the most elegant solution, but it could be made to work with airplay. For this kind of money though, you could probably find an old PC, or Mac Mini just to run iTunes.

Synology has a solution, but due to HomeSharing authentication they are unable to provide library browsing from AppleTV.
You have to kick the playback off from a browser or iOS device.
