Download this: http://appldnld.apple.com/AppleTV/041-2846.20111017.34NPe/AppleTV2,1_4.4.1_9A335a_Restore.ipsw Plug in your Apple TV into iTunes and press Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) then navigate to the 4.4.1 IPSW and restore your Apple TV.

Your iPhone will show the switch for mirroring when it sees a compatible Apple TV.

AirPlay Mirroring will show everything that you see on your iPhone's screen, on the Apple TV.

Back to the problem of no micro usb cord so unable to plug Apple TV into itunes. Can't understand why the restore didn't install the latest version of Apple TV software.

It isn't a restore, like on the old Apple TV 1G's,. its a reset. The iPhone equivalent is pressing "Reset all setting and contents" in the Settings app. Basically, the Apple TV 2 wipes the media partition and rebuilds it, without touching the OS partition.
