This might be a real duh question but I haven't had much luck searching. I'm wondering exactly how airplay works. Does it (or can it) work directly between the iPhone/iPad and the Apple TV or do they both have to be on an existing network. I ask because I always travel with my iPad. Some nights I go out but some nights I just want to hang out at the hotel and it would be nice to watch my movies on the TV instead of the iPad. Can I throw an ATV in my suitcase and and use Airplay or will it not work (assume there is NO network (wireless or otherwise) available at all, to keep it simple).

You need a WiFi network. I guess you could setup an Ad-Hoc network with a laptop possibly and have the iPad and ATV connect to it if you want to lug around a laptop as well.

OK, for some reason I didn't think there was an HDMI adapter for the iPad. I'll just get that, that is way easier.

Oh yeah. Or that. :p Assuming the TV at the hotel has HDMI that is.

Sure, but if it doesn't, the AppleTV isn't any good either.

Aye. I have been in some really nice hotels recently and have yet to see one with a TV with HDMI.

Traveling for work this week and the HDMI output dongle has worked flawlessly. The hotel has a little 32" HDTV and I just plug into the back and watch my iPad movies. I have an iPad 1 so I don't get screen mirroring of ANYTHING but it works perfectly for movies.
