I used to be able to AirPlay to the ATV, even if it was in standby. However, since a few weeks ago this is no longer possible. The ATV isn't listed as an AirPlay device when it's in standby. It's only when I wake it up that it becomes visible.

It seems that it stopped working around the time that the latest ATV update was released. I'm not totally sure if it was because of the update.

Does anyone know what could have caused this, and how to solve it?

I don't remember any of my older AppleTVs being available when they were asleep. Anyway, the solution is easy...set the AppleTV to never sleep.

ATV2 is always available for AirPlay.
It wakes automatically when a device requires AirPlay.

Mine still shows up. Have you tried restarting it?
For a moment I thought this worked, but the ATV seems to remain visible for a few seconds after I put it into standby. I can then actually connect to it for AirPlay and then it wakes up. But if you wait any longer, it'll disappear.

Visibility depends on Bonjour Sleep Proxy (google for details). Sleep Proxy is provided by Macs, appleTV-s and AirPort routers.
Proxy itself needs to be awake to provide its service.

It worked right after resetting the ATV. However, after installing a few apps it's back to square one. I don't think I've changed any settings. This is clearly a bug on Apple's end. I'm not doing anything wrong here. That said, I'm still wondering why it works for almost everybody and not for me...

Yeah.. My Mac, iPad, iPhone always see ATV no matter what. The problem is sometimes it will wake ATV automatically by playing something. Other times I have to wake up my ATV myself.

Testing Airplay extensively since iOS 6, I've found Apple TV's "wake-from-Airplay" behavior has always had varied results, depending on the hardware and iOS version involved. As such, I always just give a quick tap on the remote's Home button to wake the ATV up before attempting Airplay.

I concur. It usually works fine, but there have been software versions that seemed to be problematic. Starting it up with a click on the remote is always successful.

My ATV4 has a couple of network problems. When set to a static address I ended up restarting it occasionally to get it to connect, on dynamic it's fine. My ATV3 always appears on AirPlay even when asleep, my ATV4 has to be awake.

This must be it. My problem happened in period. When I first bought it, it would never automatically wake itself then after some time (an update occurred?) It did. And it continued to work for more than a month and now I have to wake it up everyday. Haven't tried restarting though.

EDIT: Restarting fixs it.

Same issue here, ATV 3, latest software. The past two months when the apple tv is in standby airplay doesn't show up on my computer, iPhone, etc. If the Apple TV is on then air play shows up. I haven't made any network changes, this started randomly. I plugged the Apple TV into my computer and did a full reset/restore firmware, the issue is still present. Hopefully Apply releases a software update to fix this. I'm using WiFi, but like I said it worked fine for years, just the past 2 months or so this started.
