I have a new M1 MBA. My wife has an older Intel MBA running Big Sur. I previously had an older Intel MBA running Big Sur.

My Sony Bravia x900H TV supports AirPlay and it worked well with my previous Intel MBA and works now with my wife's Intel MBA.

When I try to connect with my M1 it shows as connected but I just get a black screen on my TV. I have scoured all of the settings on my MBA and the TV but still get a black screen. For now I have ordered a USB-C to HDMI cable but I would like to get this working.

Any thoughts?

(PS. Otherwise the M1 is awesome...)

There's bug in m1 Mac, the quick fix is to change the name of Apple TV strictly in English

Thanks but I am not sure that I really follow you. We are using Airplay to cast video from the M1 to our smart TV, not to an Apple TV appliance. Also what do you mean by "strictly English."

My bad. The name of apple tv should be strictly in English

I am not using an Apple TV. I am using a Sony Bravia TV that supports AirPlay.
 
I have bugs too when trying to run airplay my mba logs me out. I have some external Display. the only way for me is to run airplay in clamshel mode.
 
I'm having the same issue with my 2018 MacBook Pro and my Samsung UE43TU7072 smart TV, which supports Apple Airplay 2. The weird thing is that this issue only manifests itself when my MacBook is connected by cable to the router. On Wifi it works ok.
However, it used to work without any problems even when my MacBook was connected to the router by LAN cable and then suddenly it started getting this black screen but audio still works.

update 1: I tried with another user and it worked even when on LAN cable so I think it must have something to do with some network settings or files.

I'm having the same "black screen" issue with Airplay mirroring or extended desktop from a MBA (M1, BigSur 11.2) and a Sony Bravia x800H, using LAN or WiFi. iPad and iPhone AirPlay mirroring works fine.
I can however "cast" a video from the AppleTV+ App on the MBA to the TV (selecting airplay button in the video window beside the volume slider).
Mirroring/extending the desktop works fine using a USB-C to HDMI converter and HDMI cable.
I contacted Sony chat with the issue and they claim no one else has reported the issue. I suggest others with this issue also report the issue to prompt a firmware update.
 
Well being impatient I decided to take one for the team. I signed up for the Beta program and installed 11.3 beta on my 2020 M1 MacBook Air.

As others do, I have been getting sound but only a black screen when using Airplay to mirror my screen to my 2020 Sony Bravia XBR-65900H which supports Airplay and works great with both my wife's Intel MBA and even from her iMac, both of which are running 11.2.

This is still broken in 11.3(beta).

I sent in the bug report to Apple via the Beta messaging system.

Good news. Today Sony pushed out a firmware update to my 2020 Bravia x900H TV and now my M1 works for Airplay. I have both video and sound.

I am guessing that Apple worked with them. Hopefully other brands will work soon...

I am on 11.3 Beta2.

My LG C9 will not mirror using AirPlay with my 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max running MacOS Monterey w/ latest version 12.3.1. I do have the latest LG update version 05.25.30 as well.
Airplay is On, LG C9 is recognized along with my WiFi showing. My MacBook Pro recognizes the C9 and is checked in my System Preferences under displays as shown below.
As I go through the setup for mirroring, everything works as it should until after I type in the code. As soon as it's typed in, the screen on the LG C9 turns black. While in that black state, I went into my System Preferences on my MacBook Pro and moved around the MacBook Pro and LG displays which didn't fix the problem. Also, my Mirroring window on the MacBook Pro shows that it's searching with a spinning icon as shown below. After a minute or so, I receive a pop-up stating that a connection couldn't be made as shown below.
Obviously, the C9 is recognized/connecting through all the steps until the code is typed in. After reading that some Sony owners are up and running, I would lean towards LG needing to get up to date. I did send my input to LG Support. Thanks

SOLVED!! I dove into my Security & Privacy Settings in System Preferences and stumbled on the following;
Firewall > AirPlayXPCHelper > Allowed incoming connections
Now all works as it should...... For some reason, Apple decided not to default this as allowed. At the very least and especially with all the people that are having this same issue, Apple should have a pop-up upon clicking on Screen Mirroring asking if you want to allow it. This would save the huge P.I.A. of figuring out this problem. Hopefully, this will correct your problem with getting past the black screen/no connection issue. :)
