Say you don't use them for 3-4 days then the case battery will be down to maybe 30% but the Airpods will still be full?

There really should be a way to stop all battery depletion when nothing is being used/charged.
No i think the battery case only uses battery if you take out the air pods and use them and then put them back in. i don't think it uses any battery if the air pods stay in the case.

my case has dropped only 15% all day.

This seems not to be true since the AirPods are always on (or in standby mode). It's pretty much the only way these would work without an on/off button and instead using a combination of opening the Charging Case lid and the Proximity Sensors. Without being in standby mode, the AirPods wouldn't be able to activate themselves when necessary.
Also, if you open the Charging Case near your iPhone, you'll see that the the nice little placard doesn't show up. So the Charging Case is using the AirPods to communicate with your iPhone. This also would require both the AirPods and Charging Case to be powered on. It's quite complicated, actually.

I think the concern is that:

A) The AirPods are always on and consume power
B) The Charging Case is always on and charging the AirPods
C) If you don't plug the Case in each night, you'll end up with both a depleted Charging Case and AirPods

I do think Apple should note that you might want to plug these in each night.

Exactly my point. The case should not continuously charge. Problem is if it didn't then we would probably be complaining of the battery drain of the headphones. Just seems like the headphones are using too much battery when in standby. Perhaps this can be addressed in future firmware updates. Who knows.

Woke up this morning and Case is on 66% so dropped about 15% over 7 hours while of course air pods are on 100% so I think it does stop charging at 100%

I am going to test this out today. I am going to charge my AirPods and the case to 100%, leave it until i go to bed then see how much battery has drained.

Over night, after I made sure the AirPods were at 100% first, the case dropped from 79% to 76%.

Not too shabby at all really.

I might be wrong but it seems like as soon as the air pods are charged at 100% the case will not keeping charging so therefore will not use battery.

I put my air pods away at 11.30pm last night and there was 32% left on my air pods. so I think why the case drained about 15% was because it had to charge my air pods to 100%.

Both airpods and case are off charge 100% at 11:27am. I will come back and check them at midnight tonight and see how much battery has drained from mine.

I have two AirPods pairs I lazily tested. Just noted the battery percentage at 1:00 a.m. One case had 59%, other had 44%. (Both AirPods were fully charged.) As of 8:10 a.m., the first dropped from 59% to 43%, other 44% to 41%.

Guess I'll have to swap my pair with the wife's.

Interesting and weird turn of events. Yesterday my AirPods case was just losing battery even though I wasn't using them. So After my test fully charging bother the AirPods and the case to 100% and leaving it for 11 hours I've just checked them and both AirPods are 100% and the case is at 97%!

This time it didn't suck up that much power like it did yesterday. I wonder why.

Sometimes batteries take a few days to "sort" themselves out via several charge cycles. Glad to know yours are working well now! I'm hoping to assess mine when they arrive tomorrow, get a few overnight charge cycles in on the case, and see how they are in about 4-5 days after heavier use.

I'm still getting them replaced due to bad build quality though.

Third night. Checked at 1:30 a.m. Both AirPod pairs were at 100% and both cases were at 83%. As of 10:00 a.m. this morning, mine are at 77, wife's at 80.

My case was discharging about 30% in 4-5 hours for the first couple of days, despite Airpods being 100% charged. Last night I did exactly what MathersMahmood did to get a definitive answer and had the exact same experience. Woke up this morning and the case was still on 100%! I've used them for about 2 hours today and at 1530 the Airpods are on 100% and the case is on 77%, which I think is probably normal....

Bottom line - I think there are some definite problems with initial charge cycles in some Airpods. Will monitor over the next few days.

Hi guys I had the same question about and I have figure it out. Is the battery optimized feature in iOS. You can turn it on or off depending on how you feel about it. Please read this article from Apple https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207012. I’m going to attach a picture with the information just in case.
I hope this helps as many of as possible.
