AirPod Max vs AirPod Pro 3

Bestbuy and Amazon are selling AirPod Max for a $429, this is a massive discount.

In light of the AirPod Pro 3 that was just released a few months ago, is it still worth to buy an AirPod Max with discount at this time?

In terms of quality and functionality, how much better is the AirPod Max compare to the AirPod Pro 3, I mainly use headache/earphones while traveling in plane or rides.

Hard to compare fairly since they are essentially different products. I use headphones for music and ear buds for everything else.

The AirPod Max sound better. A significantly larger driver over the ear is capable of a wider range, especially lows and has a more natural open sound (soundstage).

The APP3 sound good enough for many people especially if music fidelity is only one or a minor concern. They are tiny drivers stuffed inside your head after all. And while music sounds good enough for me I wouldn't argue with someone saying ear buds in general feel compressed, more processed, and claustrophobic compared to quality headphones.

That said if I could only have one or the other I would get the APP3 since I use them infinitely more, I can wear them at work, while working out, and prefer using 1 at a time for phone calls. Plus they are less conspicuous, I can pop one out to listen to what's going on around me without drawing too much attention to myself. Less of a target in a bad neighborhood too but that's a me problem....
 
max will soon better but air pods pro 3 are just better for certain situations. can use them anywhere where max there will be a use case for them

The sound quality of the Max is excellent. For comfort, they take some initial getting used to as they are heavier than other headphones (e.g., my Bose QC). I don't notice that anymore.
 
I also have both. Max for lossless music and TV/Movies at home. APP3 for most on-the-go. And finally, the new Powerbeats Fit for exercise.
 
AirPods Max here for serious listening and using in the office. Sound is way better than my APP2. APP2 for use outside/walking, in bed and in the kitchen when cooking etc. Horses for courses. if you were only going to get one then get APP3 as they are far more versatile usage wise as per @Shanghaichica post.

I ended up buying AirPods Max, I also have the APP2, I can confirm that APM sounds is much better than APP2, even the ANC is better. The only problem is too bulky to carry around.
