AirPods 2 with single pod not updating firmware

About a year ago I lost the left pod of my AirPods 2. I got new AirPod 3s and forgot about the old ones. However, I came across a cheap set of AirPods 2 with the case and just the left pod. Perfect! But in order to merge the two separate pods into a new pair, I understand that they must be on the same firmware version. I have had no success in updating the firmware of either of the single pods. They are stuck on 4A400 and 4E71, respectively. I have tried resetting and reconnecting them several times. My AirPod 3s are on 6A300.

So my question is - has anyone successfully updated firmware of a single AirPod?

You might need to un-pair, remove one from the case, pair as a single AirPod, wait for firmware to update, un-pair, swap the ear buds, re-pair as the other single AirPod, wait for firmware to update, un-pair, and re-pair as a set.

I have up until now tried to update the firmware of the pod in their separate cases. Maybe I should try using the same case?
 
Still no success here. Tried with the same case. Has anyone else successfully updated single AirPods?
