Are Airpods supposed to connect automatically to the last device they were used on only or whatever device you’re currently using?

It seems I have to manually connect them to my iPhone if they were last used with my iPad. When I open the case though, I get the animation on my iPhone that they’re being used but I still have to go into settings. Is this normal behavior? Using Gen 2 Airpods, iPhone XS and IPad Pro 2018 both on iOS 12

Ok, so this is normal behavior then... thank you. I thought the big stink about Airpods was that they auto connect to all your iCloud devices... err automatically lol
They are automatically paired to all your iCloud devices. But they only auto connect between watch and iPhone. Otherwise it’s last connected.

Ok, sorry to bust chops but I’m just a little confused. You said they auto connect to phone and watch. So I’m not supposed to manually connect them to my iPhone if they were last used on my iPad?

You’re doing it correctly. AirPods are simultaneously connected to iPhone and watch only.

My “brand new” Powerbeats Pro (which will return shortly) won’t do auto connect between watch and iPhone and auto switch audio source. Pro treats watch as a stand-alone device. Maybe it is because I am using watchOS 6 beta 4 and iOS 13 beta 4.

Right, that’s exactly my issue. If they were previously connected to my iPad but not currently connected, and I open the AirPod case next to my iPhone (confirmed by the animation on the iPhone screen) and my iPad is not even close by, I still have to go into my settings and manually connect the Airpods to the iPhone.

Correct. Im not sure why you're not getting this. If you last connected AirPods to iPad you will need to reconnect them to the iPhone. This is normal.
AirPods connect to one device at a time except for when they are connected iPhone then they are automatically connected to the watch. If you then connect them to an iPad you will need to connect them back to the iPhone.

Ok, appreciate all your help. I’ll play around with a little more
