that audio switching worries me, say your on the Mac watching videos does it stop as soon as you pick up your phone that would be so annoying, videos are showing if your on your iPad watching a video and you pick up your phone it changes to the phone how would that work, does it mean if your using your phone listering to stuff and you open your iPad it will cancel it

From what I gather, it's only if your start listening to media on that second device.

You need to give them a reason to work, so just checking messages on your phone shouldn't interrupt your media on the initial device.

It only auto switches if you listen to audio on the other device. It doesn't just auto switch each time you pick up a device..

Also, you can turn off all this auto switch functionality in settings.. and then it works as it has previously.

How do you turn it off, I hate this feature. I've been talking to Apple support for over an hour about this.

I have been on the phone with Apple for close to two hours. I am missing phone calls and information in video calls, because it keeps switching to my iPad. So far the only way I have discovered to turn it off is to disable BT, but then I loose my pencil. Apple has no clue.

Edit: I finally hung up on apple, but I found the setting. If you go to bluetooth and touch the i next to airpods, there is a "connect to this phone" setting. Change that from auto to when last, and it stops switching.

If you want to turn automatic switching off for a device, go to Settings > Bluetooth on that device with your AirPods in your ears. Tap the info button

next to your AirPods in the list of devices. Tap Connect to This iPhone [or iPad], and then tap When Last Connected to This iPhone [or iPad]. To turn this feature on again, tap Automatically.

I’ve had a strange instance since update.

walking to work with the walking workout active on my series 5. Listening to music on iPhone 11.

every time the watch ping to register 1km distance the audio switched to watch ??

also where you can normally swipe left on watch to switch to next track or see what’s playing it wasn’t Displaying what was being played on the phone.

when is 14.1 due 😂

Well I can’t get this working at all. Have the correct settings in the AirPods menu but it just won’t switch.

EDIT: A restart of both devices and it’s working.

I’ve restarted both devices and still won’t work automatically....

Yay! Thanks for this info. This was driving me crazy by shutting off what I was listening to on my iPhone when I opened the iPad. Now Good.

Not impressed by this features reliability. It does work most of the time, but it fails just enough to be annoying. It's a pity, the same functionality has been available for years, long before Bluetooth 5, on my Bose headphones, and even cheapo BT earphones off Amazon, both of which have always worked seamlessly.

I hate to say it but it’s not the same. In fact I took my Bose QC off my iPhone just a week after I got it because it hooked to my iPhone all the time even though I had taken it off.
Using AirPods exclusively on my iPhone since and I’m glad now I’m having a proper auto switching unlike Bose’s.

Found a first bug. Listening to podcast on iPhone & using Twitter on iPad.

I just refreshed Twitter by pulling down on the iPad screen & that refresh sound effect auto-switched the AirPods from the iPhone to the iPad. Did it multiple times in a row, so the auto switch works too well 😂

It switches for me every time I open Arstechnica. Whatever the no-sound media they use on their website, it’s enough to trigger the switch. So yeah, I’d say they work extremely well.

Similar thing happened to me today. I was listening to audio on my iPhone with my AirPods gen 2. I start typing an email on my iPad and they switched over to my iPad just so I could hear the keyboard clicks.
